Show me your beater bike.
The other night I was out riding and my crank came loose. I can't even begin to tell you how dangerous this is. Your feet are clipped to the pedals and if the crank comes loose you can't unclip. I managed to get one cleat out before the mishap and called my wife to come get me. Apparently the shop that replaced my bottom bracket didn't have the right one so they jack-legged one to make it work. Well, it didn't work. It's in a different shop now and I am riding my beater bike- A 1994 Cannondale R800. It has 105 shifters and is an eight speed- 39-53-12-21. It is a rattle trap compared to my Cannondale 6-13 but it gets the job done. I bought it new in 1994 for $1,000..

I put this wheel set on in 1996. I swear it's the best wheel set I ever had until the one I have now on my number one bike.

So everyone's beater bikes are just older bikes that look like they are still in pristine condition and are better than a lot of new bikes? My definition of a beater is a bike messenger style bike with rattle can paint job, stickers, mismatched wheels, tires and components. The type of bike that you can lock up in a major city and not have it stolen or not care to much if it does get stolen

I paid $30 for my Bridgestone BB-1. The parts were all rusted to heck. The frame was scratched up but had no major rust issues. I rebuilt the bike with parts I had lying around. I have less than a $100 invested in the bike. It's my beater:

My R800 is a great rain bike. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. I'm actually going to invest some cash into it by changing the stem to bring the handlebars closer so I don't have to reach to shift and use the brakes. To be honest I like the original Look pedals on it and am considering changing my good bike back to them.

I bought this bike new in 1993. It has gone through three sons riding it and after an overhaul it has been resurrected into a daily driver. I use this to commute to and from work. I am thinking about putting some drop bars on it and bar end shifters and converting it into a touring bike.

I don't think that some of those beaters count as such
Shinwon Tsunoda in all its Korean made glory, as bought for $15. Picked it up after the last attempt to buy a commuter/beater ended with my acquiring a Cannondale ST400 in great shape (not very beater-y). Currently sitting as a frameset in my loft as I accumulate necessary parts. Still need to get or build some wheels for it, find a set of handlebars and I'm in business.

I have a great beater bike story. I was riding in NYC heading back to the GWB to NJ. I see a fella up ahead at the light wearing an all white Pinarello Kit. Obvioisly the glasses and helmet shoes all looking the part. I come up to him and was hoping to see a nice Pinarello but instead see a new Cervelo. Very fancy looked great I say hey where is the Pinarello.....Oh yeah he goes, it's home it is my beater bike. Then he goes and it is just Classic....Oh, how obnoxious did that sound...I say alot but dam thats cool.
They end!
They end!

Built this from the parts leftover when I upgraded my Spec Roubaix to 6800 Ultegra over the winter. I got this unbranded matte black frameset from Bike Island a few years back for $99, so I used the leftover 105 parts and wheelset to build this.
I don't have "finished" pics, but here it was last winter in progress. I've since swapped out the seat post, put on matching tires and cut the steerer tube. Pretty cool bike. Thinking about peeling the decals off the wheels.
