Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Excellent. Be sure you're using appropriate shorts with a pad (chamois.) Also, note that it gets much easier on the butt once you get your seat position dialed in, stronger legs, etc.

Where are you riding in SoCal? I'm in the Thousand Oaks area. So much great riding here.

My butt is slowly getting used to it lol. I did 27 miles last Monday and thought I could've gone longer.

I'm in Santa Clarita. I'm trying to avoid the streets for now and staying on the bike routes as much as I can, we have plenty here. As soon as I can go 17 mph, I will join the local group. I paced someone the last time and it helped me a lot. Someday, I'll ride to Thousand Oaks lol

I won't vote.
I agree $2000 for a beginner bike is extreme to me. A $750 Norco Valence A4 might be a bit more realistic. Or if someone wanted to go with a hybrid, a $450 Diadora Treviso. Diadora has cheaper road bikes as well.

I wouldn't worry about keeping a specific speed. Go down and ride with the local group this saturday. Find the ride appropriate for slower/newer riders and give it a try. At worst, you'll be left behind, but I doubt it. At best, you'll open up a whole new world of riding. Go for it! With our hilly terrain around here, average speed isn't the biggest determining factor in rider level. To me, it sounds like you're more than ready to join up with the group.
