Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

No, it was on the roof of a car and hit another car. And before that it was dropped off the roof and before that it was run over.

And before that, it was crashed.

I think I am catching on.

I'm no great fan of Specialized but the broken bike and tires is spotless which wouldn't be the case if it was the one Contador had been riding on wet roads.

The bottle cages were not specialized approved. Its pretty obvious that the down tube failed because of incorrect torque on the mounting bolt.

True, the back of the seat tube would be a mess.

Only frame I've broken in 42 years and 150,000 plus miles was steel.

And you see that all the time with steel frames run into garage doors.

I've got an idea; let's ask Alberto what happened. Tons of speculation; very little information.

If you look at bike in ditch in front of Contador as the doc worked on him, it was an all black top tube..no yellow. From what I read, Roche left his bike there for Contador and his is a Mclaren Tarmac not an S-works so maybe different paint scheme?

As as to number on broken bike on picture, some have put rider number on backup bikes on car, so is plausible the bike in pic was on top of car and was damaged as they are claiming by impacting another bike on roof of Belkin team car. Froome changed bikes to one with his number on it at one point before he had to abandon.

Curious tho if Contador would be allowed to say frame broke causing crash. What about other riders nearby?

another thing I noted...the commentators mentioned this was not a descent but an uphill section.

It's obvious that somebody cleaned that busted frame up right after the crash!

contador's number in the TDF is 31 as previously stated. look at the pic and decide. i have. total BS from Tinkoff-Saxo trying to save Specialized reputation, but they are such a hurry to cover it up that they can't get their stories straight. hilarious and totally predictable.

one thing i can say in defense of the frame manufacturers is that after a crash (and some have multiples per day) riders barely look at the bike except to possibly yank the handlebars straight and check the chain. then they're off on a 50 mph decent.

So, spesh is now saying the bike that broke was a backup (Alberto apparently had two backups on the car) and it broke after slamming against the bikes on the Belkin car? If that's the case, were any of the Bianchis that were involved in the slamming broken?

The tube broke back, and to the left. Back, and to the left.

As noted elsewhere: The bike was fully intact after the first crash.

Its obvious to anyone from the picture that the bike fell out of the helicopter. After being repainted.

Not only is that bike intact, but the bottle cages don't match those of the broken bike (edit: and as noted right above, neither does the paint).
