What gearing do you use on your climbing bike?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

ofcourse shimano spec'd short cage to max 28t, but I have run larger on short cage 9070 RD as well as a test (32t actually). Didn't notice any issues with it. Ofcourse med/long cage would be "safer"

Climbing? I get dropped off at the top of the hills by my assistant. Bike ridden on descents only.

Try a 28t or 30t (if you can sneak away with it) and see how you go.

I found the difference between 25t and 28t to be fairly significant on those very hard climbs.

cheers

My only bike is 53/39 and 12/25. I am seriously considering a compact crankset for tough climbs.

I know I need to get a new cassette and I was wondering what the "norm" is for climbing bikes. I've got a 105 short cage RD that will accept a 28t cassette, will this make a big difference? Do I need to get a long cage RD and go with a 30 or 32T cassette?

What do you guys run?

Thanks
34/32 for me, on 6800 Ultegra. A few of my climbs are so stupidly steep that I'd go one lower, if I had it, too.
