Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First ride on new wheels my thoughts

I want to write this for others looking at getting their first wheelset. I have been looking at wheels for a year now after damaging my rear wheel which was a shimano rs10. Honestly I was hoping to find a nice rear wheel but really did not have much luck. Any ways after researching the crap out of wheels I just got a set of vuelta corsa lites. I did not want to spend a lot of money so it was either these or just put another rs10 on the back for 100 dollars less.

Any ways I was hoping to get some noticeable benefits out of the lighter wheels. Did first ride today and two things I could notice was a little smoother ride and a litter better handling. By a little I mean a little. Also it felt like it was easier or I was able to maintain my average speed better. Just hopping on the bite I did not notice any crazy acceleration or anything like that.

Today I felt ok going on my ride and it was windy some. My legs did not feel that great even. First test was a climb I do. I tried to beat my best time many times and have not been able to. Today I knocked 11 seconds off of that time which until a week ago would have been the overall record. I set a. New route record by -2:46 for 32 miles.

With the exception of that one climb I was not pushing at all or trying to go fast. Just going a steady average pace. I usually just ride how I feel that day and see what conditions are like when I go out to see if I wanna push hard or not

So am I thrilled with how the wheels initially felt? No. Am I pleased? Yes. I was expecting a little more "noticeable" difference. Every thing I notice is very minimal. Now am I thrilled with my new records? Hell yes. To me 11 seconds is massive and almost three minutes is pretty big so I am very happy with that. I have to attribute at least some of this to the wheels.

Now if for a fact I could have spent another 200 and got a wheelset that I could tell very noticeable differences in acceleration and Even better climbing I would do it. Otherwise I feel I got a good value wheel and. I am pleased.

Good on you - you're happy and that is the main thing to achieve with any purchase. Enjoy the ride.

cheers

I came from a very similar boat. I originally had shimano RS10 wheels and I upgraded them to the Vuelta Corsa Lites. I actually found them to be a remarkably good wheelset especially on hills and sprints. Given how thin the spokes are they felt stiffer in my opinion than my shimano wheelset did. The bearings on the vuelta's also seem to be much smoother and roll easier. Was it a massive difference that I personally felt, not really, but the rotational inertia was pretty significant. Granted like you said before you could spend more on one that you might feel a little bit more, but with considerations that I only spent like a 175 for them made it an awesome deal.

Yeah that is a good way to put it I agree they do roll better. I also agree assuming the wheels hold up for the money you can't really beat it. I paid 240 otd but I had to pay tax which was like 17 bucks so it would have been cheaper. Even though I did not feel some crazy difference with the new wheels I guess the proof is in the pudding with the results which is all that matters.
