Well...in that case he wasn't a stranger and was not a flipper, but you have a point.
Most of the time I give stuff away to charity because I'd rather not go through the hassle of dealing with the public anyways. What happens to it after that I could care less.

Three...A Peugeot, a Gitane, and my last pro bike, a Viscount. All of them to kids right out of college who had run cross country and wanted to try triathlons. And could not afford bikes.
really cleared out the garage. They all needed tires, which I got for them. The one on the Viscount had to get a new fork. I had stopped riding it before the fork recall. He got one at a shop of $10.
they are all still riding them. Five and seven rear gears.

I remember Viscounts. Aerospace Pro or something like that? A friend of mine rode them in the later 70s. They were quite the deal back in the day. 21# give or take and a lot less than the $1K that the other top of the line racers sold for back then.
Sorry about the digression.

Yes - my wife donated her's to Free Bikes for Kidz (FB4K), I've got 2 more waiting for me to make sure they are up to snuff, might wait for FB4K in a couple months. Also tend to give away spare stuff to one or another co-op-charities in town.
Part of "giving away a bike," is volunteer time fixing up bikes that are destined to be given away, or free fixes for those who really can't afford a LBS. Wish those co-ops had volunteer time that jived with my work hours, and locations, but no such luck yet. If I ever get my garage cleaned out I'm thinking of working with the local food shelf.

Several. I'm "the bike guy" in our locale. I snag old neglected BMX's and refurb to give away to children. The newspaper article about my work has helped with the profile and nic a little bit.

There are many on this forum that sincerely love cycling, and bikes. I am one of those people, and like to share that with otherrs. I earn enough that I can afford to give a bike to someone I care about, and the joy it brings and stories you get top the couple hundred bucks from a CL sale.

My nephew got my 1993 Concorde Squadra TSX today. That bike has seen some UCI sanctioned stage races. It has period correct DA7400 group and a carbon fork that replaced the old steel one. Gonna miss it. Last two years it's seen trainer duty exclusively. I'm a bit sad today.

I've never sold a bike. I've given bikes that I built up to my son in law, nephew, daughter and her significant other. Oh, and my wife has taken possession of a Schwinn I restored as a single speed. She just started riding around the neighborhood. I love cycling and wrenching. I like to help others be able to ride.

no, but I have given away two fly rods that I built to kids. Giving is a great feeling, is it not? It sets lots of good things in motion.

Gave my '88 Schwinn World Sport to the security guard in our complex. I'd converted it to down tube shifters, replaced tires and tubes; not much else. Still original cantilever brakes, shifters and shifter cables (I did replace the chain), etc. It worked fine, and he was VERY happy to have it.
These guys make minimum wage and they often work 10 pm to 6 am. So before you even ask it, the answer to your question is, "I don't CARE if he flipped it to make a little cash."

Just gave away my old diamondback cruiser to my father. I used the bike a ton when the kids were small and I had the seat on the back for them. They took many a nap while I pedaled around town getting some exercise. Now I hope Dad will go out with Mom (both in there 70's) for a ride.

Yep, have given away two bikes. One to my sister and one to a fellow employee that had knee replacement surgery and wanted to get into biking. I gave it to him with the agreement that he could not sell it and if/when the time came to upgrade that he was to find someone that needed a bike and give it to them no strings attached. We need to help others out, could have sold the bikes and made a little money but at some point in your life you begin to realize that money is not the most important thing in your life. I'm sorry that it took 59 years for me to realize that.

Yes, I've given away 3 bikes, each being a bike my son had outgrown. While one was a clunker KMart mountain bike, the other two were nice bikes, purchased new, used for a few years, then donated.

I took a mtb frame/wheels and built it up, then sold it to a bike shop for cheap. Now someone else can use it.

I have yet to sell a bike and generally end up giving away bikes that I no longer ride... I just gave my Orbea to a team mate that needed a new ride.

I gave my 72 custom Don Farrell away to a colleague that was interested in starting to cycle. I purchased the bike new in London while traveling throughout Europe. Although the bike was old technology with campy down tube shifters, a Stronglight crank, pedal straps, chromed fork and a brooks saddle, it served me well and I still miss it.
The recipient immediately upgraded the pedals and some other components and rode the tar out of it. Cool!

If you Google it, photo of the bike sitting in front of a Learjet.
It was a great bike for its time...but the fork sucked.

I gave away my old commuter, when I hadn't ridden it in a while. It was a gift to me in the first place, although I'd fixed it up a little and put on some nicer wheels.
