New to road cycling, need help finding a bike

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New to road cycling, need help finding a bike

Hello all,

I am new to road cycling, I had a mountain bike in high school, but during college i got away from riding and gained weight. I have since graduated and decided to get back into cycling. I purchased an old road bike from a friend to get started with. I have been riding for about 4 months now and am ready to get my own bike.

I have a $600.00 budget to work with. I recently went to my local bike shop and got sized. I am a 56cm.

I have found a few bikes that i am interested in, my local bike shop has a 2014 KHS FLITE150, and I found a 2012 Trek 1.1 Alpha on ebay. Both bikes are within my price range.

My question is which bike is better? Or is there another bike i should look into?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

With that budget I would try and find a lightly used Trek 1.5 with Tiagra or possibly a Specialized Allez. You will appreciate site the upgrades of the 1.5 over the 1.1. Check craigslist for sure! Good luck!

What kind of bike are you riding now and what's wrong with it? If you've been riding 4 months, I would just save money until you can afford to spend a bit more

Thanks, i will definatly look into those two you mentioned. If you had a choice between the two which would you choose? Trek, or KHS?

The bike i have right now is an old unbranded 80's 10-speed. Its rusted and dosent fit me very well. I only paid a few bucks for it so no big deal.

If you are in the US, Jenson's has a GT GTR series 3 2013 on sale for for $679 GT Bikes GTR Series 3 Bike 2013 > Complete Bikes > Road Bikes | Jenson USA

Brand new bike with Tiagra 10spd components and warranty not a bad deal. It would be a much better choice then the 2 bike you mention earlier.

I had a 1.5 and really liked it. I don't know anything about the KHS
