Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

switching over to road bike

Will I ever have a desire to ride my MTB again?

If you've been riding trails, yes the desire to be off road does not go away. If you've been riding your MTB on greeways, road and Rails to Trails, you'll never ride it again. Might as well list it on CL now.

If you are like me, and I have no way of knowing if you are...you will ride both with equal zeal!

I don't have a road bike yet (layaway) so I have been using my mountain bike on the roads. I just changed the wheels & tires to a more of hybrid road style. So get a set of hybrid wheels/tires and then you'll have a bike that you can use as a hybrid for touring and gravel & dirt. It's an idea anyways

I think my hybrid will maybe get fenders and become a rain and winter bike when I get the road bike I want. It will also make a good loaner bike if somebody expresses an interest in riding and wants to come along some day.

Of course, when you find a dirt/gravel road or trail in the hills, a mountain bike is a joy. Different applications require different tools.

I did the same thing before I got my road bike...and then traded in my mtb for a cyclocross bike for crappy weather/commuting/mild trails. I have no interest in going back to mountain biking...YMMV...

Both my wife and I still have our MTB's. We have many off road trails that we take our boys on, that is the only reason we still have ours. They are also great when we go camping to places with off road trails.

I can walk out my front door and ride my road bike for three hours on country roads without even having to unclip once if I didn't want to stop. If I could walk out my door and hit singletrack I would probably ride my mountain bike everyday as well. But the closest singletrack is about a 30 minute drive away. The road is just more convenient.

If I want to have fun...I ride the MTB. If I just want to ride...it'll ride the road bike.
