Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There's a guy here in town that rides a bend with a full shell...looks like a yellow torpedo. Super low to the ground and about half the guy's head above the cockpit. OMG...that guy is fast...uphill, flat, downhill...always flies past me. Last year I saw him coming out of a driveway across the street as I flew past. I had good momentum and picked up my pace to see how long it would take him to go past me...it didn't take long and he had about a 5 - 10 mph advantage on me.

I ride a couple of 'bents regularly... my bikeE CT is a semi recumbent model that is not designed for speed but it ticks along pretty easily at 30kmh / 18mph on the flats and like a previous poster.

The Catrike is a different beast and I have run laps in the park loop where roadies and tri geeks train and strain and have no problem keeping up and usually overtake and pass them since the bike is considerably more aerodynamic and requires less wattage for a given speed.

Quest is definitely a road machine

Quest usable on roads? The Quest is designed for commuting on roads! It provides all season weather protection with its fairing, skirt, and optional hood. It has full suspension and 35mm or wider tires to ride over all sorts of nasties. It has gearing so it can climb ridiculously steep grades (although slowly) and balance is no issues since it's a trike. It slips through the air like only a streamliner or well faired bent can with a CdA in stock form (way mine is) of 0.09 m^2 and Crr of 0.0045. However, it is heavy (some 65 lbs empty) and large (30" wide 34" tall 102" long), expensive (mine was $13,500 new), and it's turning circle rivals my F250 Crewcab Superduty pickup truck. Overall it's a amazing machine both in human powered performance and practical commuting needs.

By "tri-bikes" you mean trikes? 20mph sustained isn't that fast for a good unfaired 2 wheeded bent.

Overall it's a amazing machine both in human powered performance and practical commuting needs.

+1. A Quest is the ultimate in all weather commuting.

Correct, even I can sustain high 20's MPH with my Corsa Alta with my meager 250 watts FTP (on a good day!):

Yes - 3-wheeled, thanks for clarifying. And I agree about the 2 wheeled bents. I frequently see them sustain 25+mph on the flats.

Similar but I could swear the one I see isn't a three-wheeler...Now I'll have to go ride that route again to see if I can find him!

Of course this does not last long, but for quick sprints up steep grades it works as well or better depending on the athlete and training on the platform.
This.

On shorter climbs -- even steep ones -- I can drop roadies who are stronger than me on my Seiran SL. Though once you burn out your muscles, you're screwed.

BTW, I've ridden a couple Carbents -- awesome machines

Maybe an Aurora?

These things are not bad on flats or downhills but they really can't climb. Owners often add electrical assist.

Haha, I like how you let him sizzle out in the front for a while. I bet he was already redlining thinking he'd drop you and each time he looked around, there you were. Just goes to show that at those speeds, aero is king.

What do you mean by "level of exercise"? I've read in several places that cycling and running burn about the same amount of calories for any given heart rate.
