Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just carry a ziploc baggie. Used gels go in the baggie. Virtually messless

Don't ever ride a recumbent trike. You can sleep without even falling over.

I too have tried them all. I like GU gels and Hammer gels and bars.

Gu strawberry banana, chocolate, or salted carmel. Tried Honey Stinger waffles for the first time today and they were easy to get down and tasted really good.

If you like gels, my favorite is Crank Energy e-Gels. What I specifically like about them is that they're thinner so they go down easier, they taste better, no caffeine or other undesirable ingredients, they contain electrolytes so no need for Nuun tablets in your water, they contain 150 rather than 100 calories so you don't need as many, and the price is good. I haven't used anything else for years if I have a choice.

The Mountain Rush flavor is the best by far -- I don't care for the others. As far as the other products you mentioned (Cliff, GU, Hammer, Powerbar, Honey Stinger, First Endurance), I'd go Hammer Orange or Gu (lemon or orange). I can't stand Powerbar products and don't care much for Honey Stinger or First Endurance.

If you like solids and don't mind chewing, Cliffshot blocks are pretty good. I used to swear by Hammer Perpetuem, but after using it for several years, it started making me sick. Also, it can be messy to work with if you're out all day.
Thanks for the input. I may just give e-Gels a try once I run out of my stash of GUs. When using e-Gels do you still use a sports drink mix in your water bottles?

I like Hammer gel diluted in my water bottle, but don't use it too often because most of my rides are 30 miles or less and pretty casual, so I don't really need much of anything.

Cliff VS GU VS Hammer VS Powerbar VS Honey Stinger VS First Endurance?
Peanut butter with Orange Marmalade on whole wheat. Just perfect!

I consider caffeine a desirable ingredient, but gels generally have too little to matter, 35 up to maybe 70 mg. I like a big cup of strong coffee, 5Hr energy or a NoDoz to get me at least 200 mg.

Gels are basically high glycemic index sugars including glucose fructose and maltodextrin. There's nothing there to slow or moderate absorption, which would be counter productive to their purpose. Eating a gel is basically the same as eating pure table sugar.

Umm, I think so. And sugar is considerably less expensive. It's not as complicated as one might think..

Definitely only water.

If you wash them down with sports drink, the concentration in your stomach will be too high and you may feel sick on longer rides. Water is easier to drink anyway.

You can make stuff that will work, but the packaging/flavor/convenience does deliver value

Incorrect. While some are nothing more, some have amino acids and/or protein.
