Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can tell (at least I think I can) a difference between when my iPhone is connected via wire vs. bluetooth. The Bluetooth for music sounds pretty crappy. Not so sure I can tell the difference between from connected iPhone and CD, but I have not tried it recently.

Aren't there some new digital music formats that are supposed to be better?

Yeah, my car is from the era between cassette and blutetooth. I have one that works off FM radio, but it's not as good.

I will not be going again this year. I get my fair share of fried things at the various county fairs and other outdoor events I attend. The State Fair is just too expensive for my tastes.

Wife wants to go. I am undecided. If we do go, it will be during the week as the crowds are stifling on the weekends.

That will largely depend upon how the music on the iPhone was encoded.

Aren't there some new digital music formats that are supposed to be better?
It depends upon what you're comparing it to and what you mean by "better".

The quality of the BT receiver (and associated bits) does matter - some are very plainly better than others.

As far as digital music formats, it's all pretty much the same (with at least one notable exception) - you're just varying the bit depth and sampling rate. If you're using CD as a baseline, many (most?) people would be hard-pressed to tell the difference between a 320kbps mp3 in blind test in an ideal situation (in front of a nice stereo in a good room). With the digital formats that surpass the CD baseline, it would, again, be very difficult for most to tell the difference even in an ideal situation. In the car, though, is far from an ideal situation - I've never heard a car system with anything near the spaciousness (which is one of my key triggers) that's possible with even a modest, but well set up, home system.

For me, in a car, once you have the frequency response range that you want, while being fairly neutral and distortion-free, everything else is spending a lot of money for little-to-no gain.

For some reason the radio sounds absolutely horrible on my car stereo. Not that it matters much since radio programming is mostly just as awful anyway.

I don't think there's any question about it. Some of the detail you can hear is just not present in mp3 . . . at least to MY ears.

Having been out of state for ten years, it's still something that we like to do once per year. It does get expensive, and neither of us is going to go hog-wild on the food front, which is why it's limited to only once. Oh, I do really like the craft beer building that popped up while we were away - that's one of the more appealing things at the fair for me.

That's almost certainly either a problem with the encoding or the placebo effect.
