It's paved but Mother Nature is taking it back. The center ridge is almost continuous pavement, maybe three small segments of gravel. Of course if you encounter other trail users at least one of you has to use the gravelly, weedy, grassy bits.
Every time this section gets mentioned on Bike Portland some crybabies whine that it needs to be repaved. Of course I post a reply stating that paving stuff is bad for the environment. I don't think I've ever gotten a reply to that yet

Road biking depends on asphalt. It's an intimate relationship. Even with a ti frame I don't like riding my road bike on chipseal, never mind gravel and if I had to do it regularly I'd use a different design of bike. I love it when I find a stretch of broken up and potholed trail has been resurfaced with the sweet blackstuff. At the same time, bikes by themselves don't add much to the amount of asphalt in the world and they have their own counterbalancing benefits.

It looks gnarly, it's painful, but bear in mind that barely a WEEK out from this major operation, I'm walking around on it with a cane. I may be off the cane entirely within 7-10 days, by 3 weeks post op I may be walking pretty normally without crutches, cane or even a limp. That's amazing. They have come a very long way. Plus look at the cool gnarly scar I'll have to make up stories about.
I'm fairly confident I'll be able to ride a road bicycle as hard as I want to within 5-6 months.
If you had a knee like mine as recently as 1970-1975 you were stuck with it. Larry (my surgeon) started doing TKR procedures in 1977 as a new surgeon, he has been there since the beginning. By 20 years ago the procedure was fairly well established with a high success rate. Since then the implants and procedures have evolved; now it's a VERY high success percentage procedure with shorter rehab/recovery times and better outcomes. Knee implants from 1995 or so now routinely last 15-20+ years, the implant materials/adhesives today are far superior, it's quite possible that a 2014 implant might last 30+ years.

My wife with our new rescue Nugget!
He and Jack getting along very well, they both slept in our bed last night, with out an issue.
Jack and him went for a 2 mile walk last night before bed and I think that helped.
They played together this morning at Jack's favorite field, it was good to see them both so happy.
We were concerned that Jack might feel displaced, but he seemed lonely since our neighbor moved an he lost his playmate, so we rolled the dice and won it appears. He's easy going and very friendly, so maybe he will help Jack, who is very shy and skittish.
