Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

@Heathpack - you are very gracious. You ride 300 miles today with 2 trillion feet of climbing and you give me Strava kudos when I set out for Camp 9 and quit at Bear Divide!

Bear Divide is kudos-worthy.

(For those of you who don't know what we're talking about Bear Divide is a picnic area in the Angeles National Forest above our town and the climb up there is a popular cycling ride. The climb itself is 3 miles at 5% and you can only access the climb by another climb- either Sand Canyon 3-4 miles at 2% or Placerita Canyon which is 5 miles, 5 decent short climbs/descents in the 5-9% range. So by the time you get to Bear Divide, you've been going up for 6-8 miles. Definitely kudos worthy.

From Bear Divide you can climb another 3.5 miles & 5.5% to get to a fire camp called Camp 9. That's where we took our selfie with the helicopter.)

Tomorrow PV, where the ride is confusingly going to be something between 35 & 80 miles and 3000 & 9000 feet of climbing, lol. I am campaigning for short & sweet which I think is the current consensus. I will watch out for peacocks.

In order to agree with my own observations in another thread in Long Distance, I should temper my remarks about the brightness of rear lights by saying that really bright rear lights can be awful to ride behind in a paceline or while drafting.

So that is another factor that has to be worked in on this big ride, HP.

I also think that redundancy on big rides is important, hence the comment about two sets of lights in case one packs it in.

If you are going to have someone ride behind in a paceline or to draft you for any extended period, I would suggest having two lights -- maybe a Planet Bike and the Dinotte, and use the PB one on steady mode unless you are riding by yourself, or the weather really packs it in.

Lights are a bit like saddles. You really do need to experiment to find the best combination for you, both in terms of the strength and spread of the beam, and what position on the bike best suits your night sight, and especially judging road surface and obstructions. I've always preferred the fork crown.

@Heathpack. This subforum will have lots of helpful information about long distance cycling. Not all of them will venture into Road Cycling. I mean, even I really only come to this one thread and don't venture into the general 41.

Early morning at the ranger station, first stop after climbing around 2000 ft. You can see the mountains we're heading into off in the distance.

We descended from there, then another climb. Just starting down that climb, I shout, "Wait, Stop!" The boys are alarmed, stop & ask what's wrong. Nothing, I just wanted to take a picture. The fog in the valley below us looked pretty.

So then we went down for 7-8 miles, then another rest, then another little climby canyon. Then back up the same big hill we just came down (ie 7-8 more miles of up). Finally we got back to that ranger station and then turned and climbed another 1000 ft to the fire camp. Rather unusually there was a helicopter in the camp, so we tried to take a selfie with the helicopter but mostly missed the helicopter. We are all smiles though because almost all the climbing is done.

Then we went down down down for a good while just in time to experience some wind back home in the valley. Happens a lot at the end of a long ride, at least around here. But we stopped & got some ice cream bars, made everything much better. Good Humor Strawberry Shortcake, mmm, hits the spot around the 60 mile mark.

Then swang by LBS, had Paul look at my tires. His opinion is I have another 1000 mi left of wear on them. Although the rear tread is flatter than the front, it wouldn't hurt to rotate them. Then I got invited on almost exactly the same ride I did today, the shop ride is doing it tomorrow with a few more hills thrown in to make it 10,000 ft of climbing tomorrow. Uh, thankfully I have plans, those guys will do that ride at 16-17 mph I'll bet.

Thats all. Well, actually I have some interesting power observations. Maybe will post them a little later, or I might just keep riding and looking at the trends.

i love these ride reports and extra points for the selfie!

THANK YOU Everyone!

We had a nice day. Rode only 19km but it was good. Then we went out to dinner to the local casino which I haven't been to for well over a decade. Not much has changed. Still, the food was OK, and no, we didn't have a flutter... we just don't do gambling, although "The Caz" was my drinking hole for a long time. Beautiful views across the river, however, topped off the evening (geez, we must sound dull).

And we start the big move tomorrow to our new home.

Thanks, I really should post some of my there I realize. But I don't know anyone there (except you, I guess) so it's always hard for me to assess the quality of the advice I get. But if I hung out there, I could figure it out probably.

I have no fenders. No fender mounts on the Magic Bike. Fortunately it rarely rains here- well I should say fortunately for me re:the fender issue, unfortunately overall for the state of California & the extreme drought we're experiencing.

Machka and I post there quite a bit. Keep an eye out for bmike, LwaB (who's a bit grumpy but his info is pretty good), The Octopus (who doesn't post as much as he used to), unterhausen, Coluber42 (another female randonneuse who rides fixed most of the time and is a hugely talented classical musician), StephenH and thebulls. They are people who have done a lot of events, including a few 1200s and other riding such as touring, and whose opinions I would trust.

We've also met ones such as Coluber42, StephenH, and thebulls.
