Why do most folks get electrolyte replenishment via a beverage?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Half decaf black tea, quarter water, quarter cranberry juice, tsp salt. I've dubbed it the Salty Palmer. Works like a charm. Would rather drink something wet than have to chew something dry. YMMV.

I prefer to drink my electrolytes and eat my calories. The reason for that is that I can control my intake of calories without regard for how many bottles of fluids I need to drink to stay properly hydrated. If it is 50F, I am going to drink maybe one bottle per hour, and won't lose many electrolytes to sweat, while if it is 95F, I will be drinking 2-3 bottles per hour and losing a ton of salt in my sweat. If I used a beverage with calories and electrolytes, I would either be underfed in the winter or overfed in the summer. By using something like camelbak elixir tablets in one of my bottles, I can get electrolytes as I rehydrate, and then eat food as needed to satisfy my caloric demands. I like the camelbak tablets because they have good electrolyte content and a little caffeine, but only about 10 calories per tablet. They taste WAYYY better than Nuun or Gu Brew tablets too. I prefer the orange, but the berry and lemon lime aren't bad.
