Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I Think it's Time for New Tires!

My front tire is OK but my rear tire is "mr. clean bald" and I can begin seeing the fabric!

Anyways - I've never purchased road tires before... What do you guys recommend?

congratulations on using up your tire completely. take the front tire, put it on the back and put a new one of the above or below tires on the front. repeat.

Yup. If the rear tire is worn, unless the tire is wheel specific, you can save cash by buying a spare and moving the good tire to the rear.

Thanks! My tires are 23mm... Should I stick to this size? If not, should I go thinner or wider? I don't really care about comfort -- I just want to go fast.

Stick with 23 C if you want to ride fast. If you want comfort later, you can always upgrade to a wider size tire.

Were you happy with the performance of your tires in terms of grip, flat protection, and wear (might as well throw in aesthetics whioe we are at it)? There are a million options for tires out there and some are definitely better than others in one or more of those categories.

I am really happy with the flat protection. I only remember getting 1 flat on these tires! The grip and wear seemed OK - I never tried another type of tire so I don't have anything else to compare it with.

In general a racier tire will wear more quickly and offer less flat protection. I have seen 2k miles on a rear tire (Specialized Turbo), 6k miles (Conti GP4 Season), and 10k miles (Specialized Armadillo). The tire that wore quicker also flatted more often. I am a big fan of the Conti GP4 Season as I feel it offers the best compromise of qualities.

For some reason tires are cheaper if you order them by mail from the U.K., check it out. Rubino Pro 3 are fine, Michelin Pro 4 Endurance are a safe bet. Continental GP4000 are nice but skinny and expensive.
