Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Sports Reports - Aug 16/17

Tell us about your weekend cycling adventures! Where do you plan to ride? Where did you ride? Who did you ride with? What challenges did you take on?
If you participated in other sports, tell us about them too. Did you swim, kayak, hike, ski?
Got pics?

Friday -- just walking ... about 2 km, bringing my total this week to about 16 km. It's a bit of a rest week!

We're hoping to cycle this weekend ... maybe a shorter ride on Saturday and a longer ride on Sunday, if all works out. But it will depend a little bit on the weather.

Saturday -- a somewhat wintery day out there, so we decided to go to the gym instead.

90 minutes on the treadmill (30 minutes running, 10 minutes brisk hill climbing, 50 minutes just brisk walking at a gradual incline) = 9 km

15 minutes on the rowing machine = 2.5 km

22 minutes on a new exercise bicycle = 7.25 km

Total: 2 hours & 7 min of exercise, and covering a virtual distance of 18.75 km

The new exercise bicycle was one of these ... kind of interesting, and the 22 minutes went by in a flash.

Rowan did something a little bit different that included swimming. That's the beauty of our fitness centre, we can each do our own thing ... together.

I joined the Spring City Cycling Club's group ride "Sharps Cove and Hollow" ride. 42 miles. Good crowd that split into two more manageable groups. I was in the faster one and we moved along around 18mph(29kph) on the out trip. Beautiful weather, lovely scenery. Hay has been baled, corn ready to harvest, cotton flowering all over. I decided to mash my way up some rollers and unfortunately, one was a bit longer than I remembered. I got over it but I was cooked. The next one was even longer and I was suddenly dead last. I time trialed my way to the rest stop but couldn't catch my group.

Several of the riders were drinking chocolate milk (Yoo-hoo brand) at the rest stop. They swear it's the best thing on a hot day. I wasn't so sure and stuck to my water.

After the rest stop, the "fast" group splintered and I was riding alone again. On a down and back stretch in Sharps Cove, I passed the slower group and considered riding with them; they were such a fun group. But I soldiered on and caught up with a couple of ladies and we had a nice time finishing out the ride.

42 miles, 16.8mph pace As you can see from the elevation profile, there wasn't much flat riding to be had.

More road bike tests for me. Rode about 35 mins on the CAAD10, and about 30 min on the Giant Defy 1. Definitely having fun learning some about bikes during the buying process.

Sunday -- 38.45 km up the cycleway and back.

It was cool, with a high of about 12C, and a bit of wind gusting to 24 km/h, but it was mostly sunny so that was nice.

My legs were tired from yesterday's effort.

Saturday: 100km ride--that's a time and distance PR for me. It felt great for the most part. Location was nothing to brag about, just took very circuitous route around home/community. I'm a bit leery of going too far as the first hour or so of the ride it is still dark out. Nonetheless, time in the saddle is time in the saddle.

Sunday: 45km-ride with my commuter bike on a route that has a few more bumps. And because I needed some variety. Quite cool out too--14*C.

Gotta love early morning weekend rides.

Cyclist, a UK magazine, has a very positive review of the CAAD 10.

I did the Virginia Cycling Challenge Burke's Garden Metric yesterday in Tazewell, VA. It was a very nice ride and well supported, ended up with 63.66 miles with 4,343' of elevation gained. I would like to go back next year and do the full century, haven't logged enough miles or climbing this year to bite that off.

Well I'm on a training break, so not much cycling for me this weekend. We took a long weekend, so my weekend started Thursday. I got in 30 miles at dawn before we left town.

This weekend we were participating in a spectator sport- auto racing. We went to an event called the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which is a series of races of restored classic race cars.

Like these 1957 & 1958 Maseratis:

And this 1912 Franklin:

And this famous LeMans car, a Porsche 917, which has inspiried me to change the color scheme on my Madone:

Then we got home early enough that I managed to sneak in a 30 mile ride on the Madone. I guess I was inspired by the go-fast cars because I put up my fastest time ever on today's ride.

That would be fascinating!!

We go to the Speedway occasionally.

Nothing out of the ordinary weekend rides on Saturday and Sunday in S. Tampa. I got out pretty early both days and it was still dang hot. Also had to content with clouds of gnats and various points. Blah, but beats being at work.

Right now, I'm thinking a little bit of hot would be nice ... it's been quite chilly on this half of the world for a while. But you can keep the gnats.

Funny, I was thinking the exact opposite, envying the thought of a chilly walk in the woods. I’ve live in FL almost 45 years and I've been able to handle some summers better than others. Last year I had very little problems. This year it is really getting to me. I’ve all but given up on afternoon riding until the heat breaks.
