Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

R̶a̶p̶ Bike Battles of History- What do you guys think on these two bikes?

Hi guys. No rap here unfortunately but I just wanted some expert (more expert than me) opinions on two bikes that I am looking at.

One is a 2012 Cervelo S2 (used) with Ultegra that is stock except some Fulcrum Racing 7 wheels.
The guy is asking 1800$ and said it was 5000$ new

The second bike in question (I posted a brief post in the cult thread) is a 2013 CAAD10 2 with Force.
It has a 3t Ergo handlebar, 3t stem, and Fulcrum 3.5 wheels on it, a KMC chain, and is stock aside from that.
The guy is asking 1800$ as well.

Assume both have around 500 miles of normal use with no large issues. Both are the size for me. I have ridden expensive bikes before but just not for the last few years. I know they are used but I will check them out in person. Just assume both are somewhat babied and not raced and crashed hundreds of times. Thanks. I have attached some pics. I don't really want to pay them 1800$ and will try to negotiate some, but just interested to hear what you guys think. The prices they are asking are high but I just want to know how much I should negotiate them down.

Cervelo.

CF frame > AL frame

Both have shallow alloy clincher wheels - one just has such wheels that are a bit lighter than the other.

But there's a HUGE difference in the frames IMO.

S2 w/ ult was $3k street price...might have warranty issue w/ used ones. not sure.... Also came w/ 3T as OEM bits

Caad w/ force probably was $2700ish street price. Way better wheels, I like sram shifting over shimanos. Personally I'd lean to the caad if it fits well, both ARE race bikes & designed for an aggressive fit. Can be dumbed down a bit as shown with allot of stem spacers.

I'm leaning more towards the CAAD since used carbon / stories about Cervelo's being fragile concern me. What would be a amazing deal (amount) for the CAAD? Just want to know to keep in mind because I keep thinking his asking price is pretty high.

Never pay asking price on a used bike in a private sale. Sellers always ask high because they expect to be bargained down. Both of those guys are asking way too much. The Cervelo is worth a max of about $1200 and that's if it's completely mint. The CAAD 10 I would say the most it could be worth is about $1000.

Thanks for confirming what I thought. The caad guy went with 1500$ as his bottom dollar and affirms only a few hundred miles and that the bike is near mint, but I still think it's high.

I'd get the S2. And since you have no warranty, I'd do some custom paint eventually.

Talking about "dumbing down" and misusing "allot" in the same sentence makes me laugh. My apologies.

$1200 for a new CAAD10 (105). Might be decent at $1500, but only if you absolutely want Force.

Wait For New

Unless you gotta have a bike like right now, why not wait for the end of season sales.
They are going to be some awesome deals this year.
Look, a brand new Cannondale CAAD 10 3 Ultegra is going for $2,270
CAAD10 3 Ultegra - CAAD10 - Elite Race - ROAD - BIKES - 2014
That thing could easily be had for $1,800 from shop caught with it.
This spring, Cannondale itself had a spring discount on the highend EVOs, starting at a thousand dollars:
Supersix Evo Spring Sale
There is so much new stuff that just came out like wheels and component groups, and there is even more new things coming, I think there will be a huge dumping of inventory this fall.
If the two you posted are what you are limited to, I would go with the Cannondale for cheaper.
That Cervelo is butt ugly and for me, over priced for what you're getting.
These reviews put it at $2,800, but the component mix could be the difference:
Cervelo S2 Road Bike Reviews - RoadbikeReview.com
I read somewhere about the harsh ride of the old S2, maybe someone here who actually rode one can help you with
what it is like to ride.
Be patient and good deals on new will be out there.

Ah, well, there is the fact that periscope steerers improve crotchal laminar airflow and, according to Cervelo's wind tunnel data, save at least 3.7 watts over a 40K TT.

I'm still trying to come to terms with the dollar sign being after the amount. I know we say "1800 dollars" but... Aw, what do I know? I'm damned near old enough to be a curmudgeon.

according to this, the Cervelo is priced about right..... except he's exaggerating on the original price..... and that the wheels are an upgrade....

2011 Cervelo S2 Ultegra - New and Used Bike Value

but his price is not a bad one. Of course, assuming no issues with a crash or anything.

I've got an S2 and can say it doesn't beat me up at all. Isn't quite as plush as my R3, but I've done 100 miles on it with no issues. All about the saddle and tires/wheels. But, the frame itself is MUCH better than an aluminum Scott I had before and close to a steel Bianchi I rode for a bit.
