Thinking about trying Campy again, should I?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Thinking about trying Campy again, should I?

The last time tried Campy was more than 10 years ago, and have been riding Shimano/SRAM since (including the Di2 and 11-sp).

How are the compatibility in tools (I do my own wrenching)?

I built my first Campy (Veloce 10spd w/FSA BB30 crank) bike this spring, coming from Shimano DT shifters. The only new tool I needed was the for cassette lock ring.

If you are on Shimano 11, then 1 nice thing is you can use those wheels & cassettes if you get Campy 11.

Veloce full group is about $380 at Merlin Cycles, in silver. I have done more costly than that experiments, with no resale.

Cassette lock ring and a Torcx T25 for the shift levers, at least in 10 speed. i believe the higher end groups fold in more Torcx, so buy a set.

How do you like the Veloce, as comparing the pricier Campy stuff and Shimano/SRAM?

I have Veloce shifters with Centaur everything else. It shifts extremely well under load. Not under load, everything modern shifts well. It shifts better than the 105 5700 I owned for a brief duration. I would call it a tie with the SRAM X9 I had on a flat bar build.

My rain bike is currently Sora 3500, which actually shifts extremely well under low load conditions. I couldn't tell it apart from the Campy just cruising down the road. But climbing a hill, the differences become apparent.

Edit: Also, Campy ergonomics fit my hands better than anything, other than my TRP RRL levers, but far better than any Shimano I have had.

For me personally I would hesitate to switch because I have so much invested in SRAM and Shimano components which I can shuffle between bikes and re-use. I have SRAM on my Bianchi, which some consider to be a sin.

Well it works great and when ordered from the UK is very reasonably priced. Plus it has curb appeal. My mid level Campy Centaur gets way more attention than even DA or Red, nevermind Ultegra or Force.

Just something new to try, no other reason. I am a tinkerer and like to try different things.

I never understood why it's "bee's knees" instead of "bee's feet". Do bees have feet?

it's where the nectar sticks when they flit from flower to flower, hence sweet.

Plus it rhymes.

I think I am going to slowly amass a Super Record 11 groupset. What's the cassette/hub compatibility with Shimano/SRAM 11 sp, or is there any?

Never mind, I found the info. Apparently, all 11sp systems from Campy/SRAM/Shimano are compatible insofar as the cassettes/RD/shifter are concerned. That's pretty cool.

I also want to make the switch. It'd be the first Campy bike to come out of the LBS too.

But I can't but wonder.

+1 (or 2 or 3 or whatever)

10 speed rather than 11 speed however. It's still pretty sweet.
