Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This is a problem that Strava needs to rectify! I'd be KOM on a certain segment but for this. Unless the guy in first really did ride it a 35 mph to my second-best 18 mph.

It is rectifiable by flagging that ride and stating that it was done in a vehicle. The rider will either have to crop it or delete it. It's pretty obvious if you look at the speed plot and they go from mountain biking at 8 mph to 40-50 mph on an interstate...

I just put my phone in my jersey pocket and check out average speed once done. I enjoy riding MUCH more without looking at a computer. It's more zen.

I'm a Strava junkie, better than anything else I have tried to log training, performance, races and group rides. The race simulation after a race where you can track all the riders in real time and do a post race evaluation is great. The KOM's are a nice to have, not critical but interesting. Enjoy the clubs to see who is riding when and most among our groups.

I have fun with Strava by playing pranks with friends across the globe. If someone I know has a KOM anywhere in the world, from thousands of miles away, I know how to post a KOM with a slightly better time on his route. Once they notice with surprise, I will erase the ride though to keep things honest. Found out that Strava figured out how I do this, although they cannot detect the cheat. No one else seems to know the secret??

I did that once, contacted Strava, they deleted the segment.

I have had several removed on my best route. I worked up to KOM on one. But I then bested and bettered my own time to ensure I was legit.

Drafting is just another tail wind.

You have posted this before and wouldn't tell us what you do. Do you get their gpx file and change a couple digits or otherwise edit the data to make the whole ride slightly faster and then re upload it for yourself?

Nope, it's a secret but a lot more honest than you suggest. I don't snatch or edit any ones ride files, including my own. Probably not a good idea to post how this is done, as it will strip value from Strava if everyone knows the loophole. It is a concern for Strava, but there is nothing they can do about it and they cannot detect it either.

A) Strava's value is entirely subjective to the user. I don't think people will care if there are trolls making imaginary rides up.

B) Enjoy the secret. Use your powers wisely.

Plan certain rides to take advantage of a tail wind on a certain segment, especially if there's close competition. Need any help i could get.

Or riding with someone that ALWAYS goes for segments, even if you stated that its going to be a easy casual day.

Biting? I don't want your secret, I fear the damage I could cause to strava egos. It would be tragic. Feel free to troll some of my absurd segments I've made around Richmond if you'd like and I'll let you know how many of the riders around here get upset and stop using Strava.

If you get in your car with Strava running, you can edit the finish (or start) of your ride (must use a computer, not phone). Strava is the only GPS app I know that allows this kind of edit. Very helpful to keep a good ride and remove erroneous info.

Other people's Strava results are meaningless because you don't know how they were achieved. 4 or 5 guys will hammer a paceline so that 1 guy gets the credit in order to beat that guy on the other team that had the record. Gets pretty silly.

I heard enough Strava bragging & strategy on some group rides to convince me to stay away.

Yup. Same here. I made the route that I knew suited my riding style at the place that everyone else slows down because the headwind and chipseal are awful. I crushed it, besting everyone else who never even knew I was racing them by over a minute (so suck on that!), only to find that some d-hole turned Strava on in his car to make a 30 mile drive averaging 45mph.

You can flag that and it will go away. Normally Strava will pick high readings automatically with a warning if you accidentally kept recording while in a car. For me KOM's are only noteworthy if they are from someone I know well and ride with often.
