Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Sports Reports - Sep 13/14

Where are you cycling this weekend? Got any interesting adventures planned? Will you be cycling outside? Inside? Or will you be doing some other sports?
Tell us all about your rides, walks, canoeing, skiing, and any other sports you're involved in over the weekend. Post pics if you've got them!

We will not have bicycles available over the weekend, but I'm hoping there will be lots of walking. I've already started my day (today is Friday) with a short walk, and my weekend will start with more walking in about 1.5 hours.

Then early next week ... if all goes well ... there should be cycling!! Lots of cycling!!

87 mile loop. Hot. Solid group of four w/ good pacelines, but still not that fast overall.

Heat, 6,000' climbing, & a stretch w/ traffic lights were part I guess.

Early this past week, we returned from 12 days of hiking in the Sierras, much of it above 10,000' which took some getting used to since we live at sea level. We went out on the tandem on Thursday for a 35 mile flat toot and really sucked. Not having been on a bike in 3 weeks did seem to make a difference. But then Saturday we took the tandem on our usual group ride and just killed it - 11 Strava PRs, most of them on climbs. Not sure what to make of all that. It's all good, though.

A very large group assembled for the Cloud Cove ride. 50 miles or so with no climbs. Some of the triathletes were getting ready for Ironman competitions. The weather was cool and overcast and never warmed up all day.

Keel Mt. looked rainy on the way to the ride start.

I was up front on the first part of the ride; but 3 guys got ahead of me as we zoomed into Cloud's Cove. Soybeans almost ready for harvest.

Our first rest stop was the Cowboy Church. The faster riders dropped me on some rollers but I latched onto 4 other riders. One of the ladies races mountain bikes all over the country. So much for cue sheets and Garmins; we managed to get lost in a place I've ridden through dozens of times. We finally got it right and found the rest stop.

I had no gas in the tank after leaving the rest stop; I puttered along under 10mph for a couple of miles. I guess the banana kicked in and I finished out the ride at a decent pace but my legs were killing me.

I rode my 1984 Pinarello with the crazy expensive Vittoria Pave tubulars. It rides very well.

Did you lose them off the front, or the back?

Oldest daughter is playing fall ball this year and I'm coaching so no ride on Saturday. Son is playing hockey on Sunday and then life's chores took over. Hopefully a nice ride Monday night. Only a few weeks left here before the rain starts and I'll be relegated to the trainer.

What day are we in?

On ... ummm ... Saturday, I guess, we walked 4 km at LAX. Plus a bit extra at the Sydney International Airport, at the International Airport in Auckland, and at the International Airport in Vancouver.

Today, Sunday (although it feels suspiciously like a Monday), we walked about 3.2 km to and from some local shops.

Did the Chequamegon Fat 40 Race in Wisconsin on Saturday - my first one. I'm 66 yrs old, and my goal was to not be helicoptered off the course or finish DFL. I made it OK, but it was a hellof a lot harder than I expected! Still thinking about next year . . . .

Went out today to see what my new saddle and tires would do for (to?) me. My plan was to do a familiar 28.5 mi. route that has about 1800 ft.of climbing. (I'll have to check that to be sure). So, I went out slowly keeping my focus on the saddle fit and the feel of the tires. Immediately my sense was that the tires were transmitting every bump in the road and were rolling really easily. I was just spinning slowly about 75 rpm or so. At 14.2 mi. is where the climbing starts. Whenever I get there on rides with my gf we are averaging about 14.7 mph. Today, I looked down and saw that I was averaging 16 mph. Since I wasn't even really trying I was quite surprised. At this point I usually lose about 1 mph by the time I get to the top of the climb. But, today I lost only .5 mph. over 3 mi. of climbing. So, I figured "What the hell" and pushed to the end of the ride. Finished up at 16.1 mph. The tires made my steel framed Guru feel like an old all AL Cannondale. But, it felt like I was riding a scalpel and I'm willing to take the trade off at this point.

This was our annual weekend to get away to the Ocala National Forest. Usually I get to take my bike and ride to the cooling springs where the family then meets me via the car. However, on this trip I could not take my bike. So I did more walking in the woods and relaxing around the springs. It was a nice trip anyways.
