Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well aren't there 4 different Gatorskin tires to choose from ?

I'm not in competition but i'd like a durable, fast puncture resistant tire for the winter.

I use the S-WORKS TURBO [slick] in the summer but yesterday i rode in drizzle and almost went down [fishtailed].

I have the Armadillo Elite fom last year with some life left on them but they changed that tire this year and the reviews are less than stellar.

I'm looking for a 700x25

Do you get snow or does it just get cold? "In a van down by the river" doesn't help in figuring out what your conditions will be.

Sounds like Marathon winter tyres are the way to go... even with mad skills running slicks is an accident waiting to happen.

Continental also makes a decent non studded winter tyre... it is not as good as putting some metal between you and the road when you are dealing with ice.

No experience with Conti tires in the winter, but I did run 25mm Marathon plus all last winter (and will again this). Among other venues, hundreds of miles of riding on a steep, wet, frosty local rail to trail and the only time I went down was when my buddy went down in front of me on a mossy wooden bridge and it was either go down myself or roll over him.

I run Gatorskins on one bike, and they are the most skittish tires I've ever used on wet pavement.
I'd never consider them for winter, unless I lived where winter did not involve precipitation.

My winter bike runs Marathon Supremes, which are excellent on wet surfaces, and (I learned by accident) on snow.

But you are in Oregon where all you need is a wetsuit...

We ran Marathons all year when we were in Portland... nice when it snows as then you get the whole city to yourself.

Schwalbe Marathon Tire, 700 x 28C, Wire / 520G Black

This looks interesting for total sheet weather.

Its unlike anything ive used before.

The 28's are as big as i can go on my TARMAC.

I went down on black ice last January with the Armadillos and it was NOT good.

You want 4 Seasons, not Gatorskins. In as wide a width as you can do.

If you actually plan to ride in the snow and/or ice, get a rigid frame MTB and run the widest studded tires you can fit. Your fast road bike won't be fast when you can't even get it to move, let alone turn, in the snow. GP 4 Seasons are good tires and I'll happily run them through the winter when it's just cold and dry or wet. But when the snow falls and I want to ride, I'm on my MTB with Nokian tires, proven to outclimb any SUV when there's black ice on the road.

Ice don't care what tire you're rolling, unless studded.

Gatorskins all year round baby! Save 15 mins over every 40km time trial by not ever having to stop to fix a flat.

We are talking about riding in the midwest where they get this thing we call ice... I hear Idaho gets a fair bit of this as well.

I don't think that time trialling in the winter has really caught on most places.

I put my S-WORKS TURBO 700x26's back on.

Thats the second time in a month i've pulled the Armadillos off and S-WORKS back on because they're ridiculously slow and not fun to ride.

If road conditions aren't dry enough for the TURBO's i'll ride my CROSSTRAIL, i just bought S-WORKS RENEGADES 700x1.8 for that bike.

Not interested in riding on ice with studded tires because like cars the ice always wins.
