Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's the recommended power meter for Campy Athena?

I have an 11 speed Campy Athena with a Fulcrum 5 wheel set. Just wanted to know what's the best way to go about fitting a power meter.

Assuming you like all the bits you've got, the answer's gotta be a Garmin Vector pedal based power meter. Otherwise, you're looking at replacing the crank or rear hub, either of which would be a shame, IMO. You could certainly get a whole new wheel set built around a Powertap hub meter, or an ungainly iBike Newton.

Out of respect for Campagnolo, I'd get the Vector.

So it's not just a hub change with the existing wheelset? Should I choose that route. I do like my Look A5.1 pedals, and as you mentioned I like everything on the bike. Thanks for your input. I didn't know options were so limited

Assuming the Fulcrum rim has the number of spokes that matches a PowerTap hub, there is no reason you can't rebuild the wheel with a PowerTap hub. You will still need an ANT+ compatible computer such as Garmin.

There's a new one coming out that attaches via the pedal axle. Least intrusive of any yet. Not sure if it's "vaporware" or going to make it to market.

No, you probably could just replace hub/spokes. In my mind, it's a little tricky deconstructing a "system wheel set" wherein the whole is designed to work together. For example, Powertap don't have a straight pull 20h hub, so you'd have to use a standard G3 hub, but does the flange spacing and height put the same kind of forces into the rim once the wheel is built? May not be a big deal, and the 5 is not like a paired-spoke build, either, but I can't help but wonder. Probably contacting Powertap is the thing to do if you want to go that route.

As far as options being limited, you've already got a complete bike and there are only so many different ways to measure power, so you're going to have to swap something out, whether it's hub, wheels, crank set, or pedals. The Stages system, which replaces a crank arm, won't work with your Athena crank, because they haven't developed anything for Campagnolo yet.

SRM or Power2Max for Campagnolo.
