Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I need a good light RD sub 60$

I have a 12$ Replacement derailleur on my 90s Bianchi road bike. I want to upgrade to something 'better'. It has downtube shifters, so as far as I know, the rear derailleur can be flexible with amount of cogs. I have a 12 speed, but I may want to upgrade to 18 speed in the future. I'm not sure if that matters.

What RD could I get off eBay sub 60$ that is solid in regards to durability and efficiency?

Thanks

By going from 12 to 18 do you mean 3x6 or 2x9?

I buy used 90's mid-cage length XTR mountain shifters (8 or 9 speed) for my road bikes. According to the weighweenies site, weight-wise, it's similar to Ultegra rd's.

I have a 2x6 right now. I may want to move up to 2x9.

That would probably mean going from 126mm rear spacing to 130. If you have a steel frame, you can "cold set" your stays, but you're stuck if you have Aluminum.

I've found 90s-ish Campy Chorus RDs for your ballpark, and I've sold old 105s for around that much too. My 6spd 105 RD was able to friction shift the full range of a 9spd Tiagra 12-25 cassette. Just look for something that's in good condition.

I do have steel. Would modern ultegra work also?

How about a new-old-stock Ultegra 6600? PM if interested. Otherwise maybe a lightly used 9-speed era 105 (5501) for around $35?

If you have non-indexed d/t shifters, then pretty much anything will work. You should follow up with dtrain.
