When will UCI lower their minimum bike weight requirement significantly (say 1 lb)?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Doesn't really matter. Even if they aren't they are still riding bikes that could be legally used, mostly because that is what's available. But if the rules change in the way suggested by that article, instead of just needing to be over a certain weight they will now need to be approved. No, most of us may not need it, but that won't stop manufacturers from doing it any way and charging for it.

And think of the poor weight weenies who have clawed they way down to a 12 lbs bike. With the weight restriction removed Trek and Specialized will probably just start selling them that way and then everybody will have one. Jerks.

So flag the thread and ask the mods to move it to Pro, then.

I'd say most of the #41 can't afford to get under the weight limit.

The real jerks are the ones with 18 and 19 lb bikes but refuse to be slower than the people on 12 lb bikes.

Certainly it costs more than to buy a heavier bike, but it doesn't have to be exorbitant. I bet you can do it for $4,000 easy. That would be a custom build of course with lots of home wrenching. And some used items would make it easier. If you require everything new you would have to find a close out frame, take off group, <1,300 g per pair wheels built from the readily available Asian parts, and a carefully chosen cockpit. Based on what I have already done more than once, I bet right now I could get down to 13.5 lb without pedals, bottle cages or computer mount for under $4,000. That might have to be 20-speed mechanical rather than 22-speed, but still.

What happened? You capitalized the first letter of the sentence. You aren't ill, are you?

I am fully capable of using correct punctuation and capitalization. I got tired of the all-lower-case and no-punctuation a while ago. Please try to keep up.

I have a good job and no kids, but I'd be in a lot of trouble at home if I spent $4000 for a bike. "But honey, it gets me under the UCI weight limit!" wouldn't fly as an excuse either.

Understood. No argument. But lots of folks are riding that price bike. Or have multiple bikes that cost that much or more. With or without the light weight.

The majors are already selling bikes under the 15 lb limit. The weight restriction has zero impact on anyone not governed by the UCI. All takes is money. So why the hand wringing over the UCI's regulations?

I was just thinking a change is due and was wondering when it might be coming.

the wooden plank is for ride height considerations, not for reaching the weight min. The plank is inspected for wear, if it is worn past a certain amount, that means their ride height has been too low, and the team gets zapped.

It's other folks wringing their hands. I'm just eating popcorn and stirring the pot. This one is brilliant. Eight pages (and counting) is quite an accomplishment.

You appear to be losing sleep over the definition of "hand wringing".

This is great. We are hand wringing over whether or not we are hand wringing. I could never have predicted this. Excuse me for a moment while I head to the kitchen for another tub of popcorn.

I thought the thread was done. But that announcement brought it back to life. How can the weight of a filled water bottle or a trip to the bathroom stir so much discussion?

How is the weight of the electric/auto shifting transmissions and those electric motors talked about in the other threads going to factor in? Really, the three threads should be combined. After all we are just talking about making things easier for the rider.
