Continuing my education on Campy

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Continuing my education on Campy

After a brief use of Campy drivetrain (Veloce 10 years ago), I bought some new 11sp Super Record (shifters and brakeset) and Record (derailleurs) components and installed on one of my bikes. After about 200 miles, here is what I found:
- Love the hoods, much more natural for my hands
- The shifting is great. There isn't that little delay normally associated with SRAM or the lack of feedback with Shimano. The Campy SR/R seem to strike a great balance between smoothness and feedback
- Like the Ultra-shift where I can down shift several gears with one press, and was useful in the rolling terrain I ride here
- Set up was pretty easy, comparable to Shimano, and probably less fussy than SRAM. Even with my Rotor Q-rings (mid-compact) crankset, set up was pretty easy. Just a tiny bit of rub when I am in small ring/biggest cog. I may be able to adjust my crankset to get rid of that.
- The cassette I am using is 12-32, and I don't seem to have any problem with that

This got me really interested in trying the Athena for my steel bike because I really like the silver retro look of the Athena group. I am looking at the new 11sp group. So here are the questions:
1. how is Athena compare to SR/R in terms of performance?
2. are the hoods the same?
3. I don't think Ultra-shift is available on Athena, but I heard it may be for 2015. Is that true?

Like others said in the other thread, Campy SR/R are the bee's knees. They really are and I am liking it so far.

2015 Athena won't have Ultra-shift, and won't be available in silver. The thumb-button will be similar design to the current EPS button.

Chorus, Record and SR Mechanical will have Ultra-shift and the old style thumb-button.

Page 8 says "Powershift" (1 up, 3 down) for 2015 Athena carbon levers or "deep black, bright silver"

You mean upshift, surely? I'm not familiar with the other systems, but I'm fairly certain they can all downshift several gears at once, but only Campy has the multiple gear upshift option.

Yes, upshift.

Also, I really like the indexing of front derailleur shifting.

According to the 2015 catalog, you are wrong.

Oh! What a pleasant surprise!

I was going by all the publicity photos that had been out so far showing the new levers only in black. I had been getting tempted by the drop in prices on the outgoing Athena groups, but I might hold off until this is available.

It'll be over $1000 for a group, though, won't it. I'll never get that past the Accountant.

Darn bean counters!!!

I was also relieved to see that the silver would be available, especially with the new thumb button!

I especially dislike how this particular bean counter has a different attitude towards cycling accessories than she has towards purses and shoes. One day I'll get my dream bike. One day.

I was devastated at the thought of the silver going away. Campy has always been silver, and to my mind always should be.

It uses the PowerShift mechanism which is an abomination incapable of shifting multiple cogs smaller like the original ergo levers introduced in 1992.

The old PowerShift mechanism also wasn't as durable as the UltraShift mechanism. although Campagnolo reports revising it a a running change so new shifters should be better.

Buy Chorus levers and you should be fine.
