High end bikes are around $10k or so right? My current bag setup for golf would come out to around $4k if I paid retail for all the clubs plus bag (I'm fortunate to have found some good deals on top of receiving some free sticks). If I wanted "tour issue" stuff (same as the pros), multiply that by three. Tournament and public greens fees this season are a little over $3k total so far and this was the least amount I've played in recent years. If I wanted to join any of the truly private clubs around here, it would be around $10k minimum yearly for the no initiation clubs. That ranges up to $100k yearly dues for the truly swanky places.
Bottom line, cycling is much cheaper than golf!

Like I wrote earlier, it doesn't have to be the case. You can still enjoy the game of golf without spending tens of thousands of dollars. I had played myself into a pretty decent player through lots of rounds and lots of time on the practice range, but my equipment had little to do with the enjoyment I got out of it. A new $600 driver that all the pros were using weren't actually going to improve my score, but hitting 100 practice bunker shots might.
It's the same thing with riding. Ride more and you'll get better at riding. If you want to have others admire your equipment then spend more money on your equipment, but it's not going to make you a better rider.

$425 for a full Campy Motobecane Le Champion and $25 for a Lutz track suit. $20 for a pair of Detto's and I was in. With my Sergal shorts, just under $500 got me started in cycling. And two weeks later raced in the 1st Boul. Mich. Bike Rally, downtown Chicago. Dale Stetina took home the win in the Juniors race and awarded a Rolex watch for the effort! In the Intermediate race a pair of Campy brakes(hot stuff at the time) was a lap prime!
