Chainstay Protector, Both Sides? One Side?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Chainstay Protector, Both Sides? One Side?

Stupid question I know, I also know that the chain is only on one side.

With that being said, do people apply chainstay protectors to both sides? Even though the chain is only on one side, I'm assuming that applying it to both sides would offer more protection against rock chips.

I was just curious on if its normal for people to apply on both sides.

Also, a more stupid question. No one does both the top and the bottom of each side right? Now that would be just going overboard....right?

Just the drive side, on top. But go hog wild if you'd like.

Chain protector ONLY on chain side. If you are concerned about chips in that area, clear bra can be a great choice to help protect.

Thanks guys! Just wanted to know what was the norm.

Doubt I'll go hog wild (haha). Amazon is charging me like 7 bucks a pop for the protectors from Wheels Manufacturing.

Im just going to leave the other side as well as the bottoms clear of anything. I hope it doesn't pick up any chips.

I think the small pieces for cable rub are next important (after the chain protector). I've used a few packaged sets, like this:

Good call about the other frame-protecting products (like 3M) if the OP wants something more. Maybe some clear film/bra on the underside of the downtube and stays, etc. I've never been that concerned I guess.
