Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

speeding ticket while riding a bike?

I was just curious if you could get a speeding ticket on while riding a bike over the speed limit. I like to ride pretty fast through town and I was just curious if I could get pulled over.

technically the cops could, but i wouldn't count on it. Cops are always too busy eating donuts to pull over a lycra clad guy on a bike.

Although running through stop signs is another story. For that you can get a ticket. Depending on how bored the cop is.

Yes. It's possible.

At the 2002 Ghent-Wevelgem the bunch was snapped at WELL over the 40kmh posted town speed limit in Ostende by fixed traffic cameras. As every rider was easily identifiable by their number, the town council could have sent out fines. But they didn't...

That's my dream, to get nabbed for speeding on a bike. Just once. Then I could have something I could stick up on my wall, and be proud of. I would ask them to make a special laminating speeding ticket for me, with the speed in big bold letters.

Yeah, I try at least to slow down a little for the stop signs.

I HATE it when I see other bikers just blow through stop signs and red lights. Gives everyone else a bad image.

Cops had the radar pointed at the Hell Ride one morning on Beach Rd in Melb here...I glanced at my computer, 65kmh....so 5kmh over.

Nothing happened. Maybe just gathering data.

I sometimes ride on beach road between elwood and port melbourne. I don't have a modern road bike, but could you actually get up to 65km/h on a modern road bike without having a massive hill, along that road? I wouldn't dream of that speed with my current stallion.

Here in Canada, Ontario atleast you can get a speeding ticket. I got 2 warnings the other week for going 10 and 15 over in a 50km/h zone.

How could you get done for speeding (rather than just warned) when it's not a legal requirement to have a speedometer on a bike? Even if you have one, it's not a requirement for it to be set up properly, i.e. read the correct speed. I bet that's why no one ever gets a ticket. I'd be surprised if anyone ever has.

Check your local laws. In most states, an inoperative or no speedometer at all does not excuse you from adhering to the speed limits. You are required to know the effective speed limits in your place of travel and you're required to take actions to ensure that you do not exceed them. If this means that you must slow to a walking speed in a 15MPH speed zone because you are not capable of gauging your speed without a speedometer then that's what's expected of you. Many older motorcycles didn't and still don't have speedometers. Do you think they're simply excused if someone in a pre-1980 speedometerless motorcycle is screaming down some California highway at a radar-clocked speed of 85MPH?

Washington DC commuters that cut through Arlington cememtory used to get tickets periodically. The speed limit is 15 mph and it's easy to hit 30 coming down the hill.

Yeah, just don't give them your driver's licence (if you have one), or you could get points taken off, too.

There are 2 spots where I pass on my morning commute here in the Socialist Republic of Mass, where cops sit with radar guns in hand. I've started yelling out my speed to them as I pass - Hope they never decide to pull me over.

I also usually slow down before I blow through stop signs and redlights (if there is no traffic at any corner) otherwise, I take the lane and own the road.

If I ever got a speeding ticket on my bike, I would probably happily pay it and then have it framed and hang it over my desk in my classroom.

I have often thought about it. I live in a neighborhood that has a speed limit of 25 that is very strictly enforced by cops with radar guns. You see them virtually every day. My speed record for the main street that goes through the development (a dead end) is 37.2, and I enjoy whizzing by the cars afraid to go even slightly over 25 in that the residents are wise to the over zealous enforcement. I thought if caught, I would try to plead innocent of my speed, and if the officer knew about bike computers, I would claim it to be non functional.

yup, been there done that.
Back in 83ish? riding from Falls Church to DC cut through Arlington Cemetery down the hill
and pulled over 28 in a 15. Don't recall how much it was though.
I think that is a special case though since its a national park/cemetery etc.
