Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Toronto road cycling

hey,

for those of you in toronto ontario...here are some great places to bike if you're looking for something different:

bloor west - Go south down windermere road - from bloor its downhill and there is a round-about on this road. If there is no traffic you can go through the S-Turn style really fast. its a lot of fun.

High Park: Huge area, the park can be a little annoying unless you know the area (dirt paths mixed with paved). This place is heaven in the residential area. Smooth roads..Loads of hills, both enormous and steeeeeep. Beautiful area.

Harbour Front: For obvious reasons...long, smooth, cyclist friendly.

St.George/Beverly street: Nothing special, but quite roomy near queen street, which is nice during rush hour

anyone have any of their own favourite spots?
im guessing someone will say temprence? (couriers)

I like the trail along highland creek it starts at the lake and runs about 10km. It gets busy on the weekends during the summer tho, so I only ride it during the spring and fall or during a week day. My other favorite and a know alot of other cyclist as well is the roads north of the zoo traffic is not that bad.

After getting really sick of the MUTs, I developed a love for bombing along Lakeshore out to Oakville and Hamilton. As long as you're very comfortable in traffic, it's a great route that allows for long stretchs of high-speed riding. Especially now that they've repaired a lot of the road past Oakville.

For hard, fast crit style riding, I like the roads around the Docks during the weekends. Large stretches of road all to yourself which form a nice 5km loop. Great for LT intervals and meeting other like-minded cyclists.

North on Keele up to King Sideroad Rd. west to Concession Rd. 8 and up to Aurora-Stouffville bacK east to Weston Rd. and south back to the city. Nice roads, good scenery and a fair amount of cyclists.

That's my area. I live at Bathurst and Bloomington. Great quiet country roads wherever you want to go. Decent hills through King City to the West, through Markham/Stoufville to the East. Though they are probably speed bumps for many others here on the Forum.

Anyone done the Doughnut run recently? It is attracting 100+ riders yet? It's a lot more fun with fewer riders who work together in groups, compared to the usual free-for-all hammerfest in the summer.

Just wait until someone (at worst, a child) blindly walks in front of you. Seriously - TO's MUTs are more dangerous than you'd think. I'm not trying to preach, as I use that very trial daily on my commute from Etobicoke to downtown, but I've seen and experienced so much pedestrian stupidity that I just get too nervous when taking them any faster than a nice 28km/h cruise (except the small hill you mentioned - the pavement is too smooth not to!). Most people don't even realize that it's primarily a bike trail.

That trail is not 'road cycling' friendly. Great for a leisurely touring ride, but not for any serious training IMHO.

It is very senic, however.

Story about Waterfront bike trail.

Summer 2001, I am riding my old mountain bike along the lakeshore path near ontario place, maybe 12 kph tops, when some kid, maybe three or four, wrenches her hand way from her mom and runs perpendicularly across the trail in front of me. I brake and cut behind her, only to have her suddenly change her mind and try to run back to her parents, back into my new trajectory. I slam the brakes and the bike kicks up, I endo, and I dive off the front of the bike completely over top of her, and bike falls back behind her. Nothing from my wreck even touches the kid. I land hard on my forearms on the pavement.

As I sit there bleeding, mom comes and quickly leads away junior, who was standing untouched and suprised in the middle of my train-wreck. "You must be more careful." she says, maybe to both of us. She had no inquiries about my obvious injuries.

As I am picking up my bike, some guys in "overkill" beachwear walk by. "Dude, how did you manage crash riding the bike trail?"

Since I didn't have an answer, I guess it was a good question.

Hey, it does happen. Try communicating with people, sometimes (okay, rarely) they'll work with you and take turns pulling.

Best place to bike in toronto if you have a mountain bike is downtown period. Lots of stuff to trick off of. In the summer you can find me wrecking the crap out of my mountain bike jumping off the numerous stairs and docking ramps.
