Bike Cell Phone Mounts
Are there any really good handlebar or stem mounts that allow you to see the screen without being obtrusive? Everything I have tried has been pure crap. I would like to hear someone who rides hard and is really satisfied with a mount.

I have a galaxy note 2 which is quite large and I simply purchased a cheap black case, used a razor blade to put 4 slits in the case, and used 2 zippy ties to hold it to my stem. Works like a charm and on just about every ride someone asks "where did you get that phone holder". Looks great with the phone installed.

I have a iPhone 5s and use the Rokform V3 mount: iPhone Bike Mount for iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 5/5s and 4/4s.

I used the RAM universal mount prior to buying my Edge 1000. Even though it was adjustable and you could make it parallel with the bars, it was far from unobtrusive though:

Those that use their phone on the bike, please get a phone holder. I crashed on a downhill after going over a bump because I had my phone in my hand. Only if I bought mine earlier.

Mounting one over the stem or top tube never worked for me because I'm lower on the road bike and couldn't really see it well unless I sat up. So it has to be something out in front of the handlebars, like you see with Garmin gps units. I also had difficulty with anything that had me sliding the phone inside, with a transparent plastic because different light angles and shadows made the screen impossible for me to read, or to work the touch screen. I wound up making my own, which isn't as elegant as the Garmin mounts but otherwise satisfactory. I'd look for something like this but which fits phones.
I think it's going to be obtrusive and "fredly" regardless because the phone is going to need a large platform.

This is my current one except mine is just a sealable sandwich bag to protect my phone if it rains. Only problem is I cannot see it while I ride....

The Lifeproof case itself is great, the accessories, not so much. The cradle itself and the latch are plenty strong and convenient to use, but the mechanism that attaches the bar clamp, belt clips etc. is a fragile piece of crap.
My bike mount exploded just from the inertial force from hitting some railroad tracks at speed. A backup tether saved my phone. I've also broken a belt clip just hitting it with a glancing blow on a door frame in the same place.
A little urethane glue permanently fixed the bike mount.

I guess it depends on your bike, my Lifeproof mount is still going after couple thousand kms on my smooth riding Domane. It has a slide lock to ensure phone does not pop out. Mounting bracket has different sized rubbers leaves for bar or stem. Mine has never come loose.

The integrity of the mount shouldn't depend on the ride of the bike.
You can fix anything with a little Seamgrip though.
The phone doesn't pop out, that part of the design is fine. So is the bar clamp and ball and socket. The weak point is the silly little plastic insert that's the common locking component for all of their accessories.
That and they've attempted to build in obsolescence by making it really difficult to replace that part so you can't replace components and have to buy a whole new assembly. (more of a concern with belt clips)
It's just too bad that what is from all other aspects a fine design it has this built in weakness. Their case is the maybe lightest one that passes the mil std drop and water tests and weighs a fraction of what most of the others do.

I'd be afraid of the phone getting damaged from hitting something or even sweating on it.

That's why you get a case that is rated to MIL-STD 810G
Needs to survive a 6' drop test and be water and dust tight. There are a bunch of manufacturers that now make cases to that standard. Otterbox and Lifeproof as well as maybe a half dozen others.

i recommend against the RAM X-grip after my iPhone 6+ fell out and bounced into a busy road. I do recommend the griffen survivor case for protecting my iPhone 6+ when it did fall. I ended up ordering Nite Ize HandleBand which has worked great, it does squeezes the case a bit.

I am a huge fan of Slipgrip phone mounts. You can get them specific to your phone and case. Secure mount and when the weather is sketchy, I place the phone in a ziplock sandwich bag. Welcome to SlipGripCarMounts - Innovation in Progress

The Topeak RideCase is awesome. No zip ties or flaky bar mounts. It screws right into the stem and is very secure.

I like the ram mounts. They have a number of cradles. If you have a popular phone, they have phone specific cables. I think the finger mount is better than the x mount but would go with a phone specific mount if available.
