Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I went with the Bontrager RXL over the XXX after reading reading "Recommended for use with small water bottles and on-road use only."

Finally got the new saddle and bar tape on. I think it looks better than the white, and hopefully the 3.2mm Lizard Skin DSP tape will be good on the bear paws. I'm starting to think the cables look like a red rat's nest in front of the head tube. Maybe the next set of cables will be black.

Also agreed. I changed my over to black and it looks much cleaner, IMO. Though I do like the rear derailleur staying red. Maybe I will do that. I always like a little unique touch on every bike.

Any thoughts on the S5? Just getting into cycling and thought this be a nice bike to start and work up to some recreational rides in the 20-30mi range. Its a bit more than i want to spend but hoping that keeps me motivated too!!

I think when the cables were exposed on the old frame, the red looked better. But with the internal cable routing, it's just unbalanced now with the red jumble up front.

Me? I was too cheap to replace my old DA 9-sp.

Here's mine! Had it for about 2 weeks now. It's the SLR 8. Definitely one of the best riding bikes I have ever ridden.

I went for its first "real" ride today, a short 20 miles.

The bike is FAST... it's very light and seemed a bit twitchy when I got out of the saddle.

I used to spend most of the time in the small chain ring, but today I was in the large only down shifting when climbing. Every little lean made the bike turn. When out of the saddle the bike was a bit to handle. But i guess it just took a few miles to get used to and all that went away on the ride back.

I was surprised to review my Garmin stats and see my average MPH higher that normal. Being the start of the season and a 22mph SSW wind it was more of a surprise.

Yes, the bike cost 3 times my previous bike, but the difference was very noticible.

Also tires are 25mm running 100/110 psi. The ride was very comfortable even on the pothole infested roads on Long Island.

Here it is in "riding" form.

Pic with a pair of Rolf Prima Vigor demo wheels. Needless to say, I prefer the black wheels over the silver/white spoke thing.

I'm saving up for an SL 6 though, higher carbon and full fork, maybe just stay with SL 5 since 105's are fantastic.
So you're saying the matte black shows more grease than the crystal white? How is that possible?

Yeah that's odd. My 5500 in matte black never, ever, ever looked even remotely dirty unless it got splattered with brown mud. No grease, fingerprints, roadkill, tar, or anything else ever seemed to show up. My Emonda is gloss black and it shows every smudge and drop of sweat that lands on it.

Did Trek raise the price on the SL frameset from $1400 to $2100?

I didn't mean like dirt or dust, I meant like grease from your fingers touching it would leave prints or shiny oil. In terms of dirt and grime, the white will definitely show it more. I wasn't very clear my bad.

Mine is 14.6 with everything including 45mm deep wheels.

I could not imagine riding any distance on the Tune saddle.

Also, its not just the weight but the stiffness of the SLR frame.

Running DA C35's on mine, I love the frame. Just about have it dialled in and will cut steerer tube soon. Trying out some 38" bars, down from 42" still not sure if going to stay with them or not. I have always used 42" but the fancy fit program says 38" it should be. Using Spec Toupe Pro saddle working just fine. 35's are deep enough for me, we get a lot of wind and they catch the cross wind more than enough for my liking.

Hot! You're quickly convincing me that black cable housings are the way to go on this bike.
