Hey guys, hope you're having a good weekend. I've got a question regarding a new 11-32 cassette on my Emonda, figured it might be better to tuck it away in this thread rather than spam a new one (I'll delete if I'm wrong though).
So I'm 2 years/8,000 miles into riding now. The last 6 months I really dropped off in miles and fitness, gained 15lbs and finally waking the hell up. I moved to a new city in SoCal and I'm surrounded by pretty epic climbs. 7 of the biggest climbs are within 1 miles from my house and average 12-14% for 2-3 miles each. PERFECT for repeats. I'm an elevation fiend and my club has monthly strava challenges for fun. Long story short, I went and tested the climbs on my SL5 with compact 50-34/11-28. I really struggled at 60-65 cadence simply unable to turn the gears over. I know that I should be able to get up these suckers without whimpering down to a 32cog, but I want to give it a shot and start doing repeats 4x a week. It will give me insane elevation for the leaderboards and I'm lucky to have such great climbs outside my door.
Okay, long unnecessary story over. I'm still learning a lot about bikes in general, so maybe you guys can help me decide. I want to order a 5800 11-32 cassette, 5800 GS rear derailleur (long cage), and a new chain if necessary. I'm not sure about the chain because I read somewhere else you don't need to increase the chain length -- is that true?? I also have a 2nd Bontrager Race wheel and was wondering if I'm able to have 1 wheel with 11-32, 1 wheel with 11-28, and swap them without changing my GS rear derailleur. I don't want to sacrifice clean shifts so hopefully you guys can fill me in.
I love my Emonda more than anything else. Getting that extra ~20% cadence up super steep grades would really make a difference and I'd love to be the first "Everest" in my hometown Sorry if this is too long, I have a habit of rambling.

Practical answer: Chains are relatively inexpensive and a higher wear item. You will require a new one after 2-3000miles so go new to mate w/new cassette.
re: Bontrager wheel. I infer you have two identical rear wheels w/similar dish. You should be able to swap them out w/o an indexing issue. (maybe require a tiny micro-adjustment on RD barrel adjuster for any imperceptible differences). Hi/lo limits should work as-is but verify. (another option, swap cassettes rather than wheels).
Update: Forgot about B-screw. More than likely no adjustment necessary unless your current setup is so dialed-in that the 32 cog hits the upper jockey-wheel. Othewise you have to back that down so it doesn't touch.
Finally, I sense a bit of embarrassment about using a 11x32 cassette. That is some very challenging elevation. I'd welcome that ride opportunity at my doorstep. If so, I would also be running a cassette w/32 cog on the rear.

I was just checking out my LBS and they had two Emondas side by side. I was admiring both the ALR6 and a S5. One is aluminum and one is carbon. The colors looked very close: dinster black vs. matte black. Both stickered in at just under $2,000. So which is the better deal for the recreational rider? The ALR has ultegra vs. the carbon's 105. How to choose?

I guess I hesitate about going up to the SL since I am a more of ride alone for mental and physical fitness, not crit racing. It may be more bike than I truly need. I've seen some remarks regarding the internal routing as being noisy and a bit of a pain to maintain. Will I have to shave my legs now?

Internal cables are no more of a hassle than external ones and are dead quiet.
Shave your legs... no, get them waxed.

Finally got my GoPro setup. Lots of fun, VIRB edit works great! Can record cool descents or efforts and share them with my club or whatever.
Here's a fun descent near my house I do repeats on
I'm not a strong rider but here's a lucky KOM effort
