Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise/Sports Reports - Oct 25/26

Another weekend for cycling ... tell us about your cycling and other sports!

We're on a long, long weekend that started on Thursday. But unfortunately we do not have our bicycles with us. So we've been walking instead, and I walked 5 km yesterday!

Leading a group ride- 45 miles, 1/2 road, 1/2 dirt, 4k+ climbing.

Weather forecast is wet, windy, but not cold.

The shiny bike folks will no doubt stay home...

Rode some wonderful roads south of the Tennessee River today. The area has everything; flat roads, rolling, hills, lots of short and steep climbs.

It was 38F when I left the house this morning. Fog was a bit thick:

Most of us had on leg and arm warmers at the start.

Our ride leader had made arrangements for his parent's house to be one of our rest stops. Despite cue sheets, maps and a couple of Garmins, we rode right past their house. Finally got there to enjoy some bananas, apples, crackers, pbj sandwiches and cold water. Their hospitality was GREATLY appreciated.

62 miles, 15.6mph pace, 43mph max. 2838 feet of climbing.

I rode my last tour ride of the year. This was my second time and becoming favorite of mine, Tour de Shawnee in Shawnee,IL. I had few miscues on directions on 65 mile w/ tunnel hill option. I still rode new personal distance of 67miles and new avg speed 14.3mph riding my mtb. The weather was great in high 70's compared to last year frigid mid 40's. Next year I will do it with my new cyclocross bike.

Lots of hiking and a little caving on the Bruce Trail in S.W. Ontario so my photographer daughter could catch the last of fall colour.

Didn't rain much, but there was some mud.

My co- adventurer bailed after the first dirt section. 5 or 6 miles into the second dirt section, a stick kicked up into the RD, making a big mess.
I was able to shorten the chain, & single speed back to the road, but the chain didn't stay put with much pedal pressure, so it was a pain.

Could have limped back, but no cell reception along the way, & might have impacted the evening plans,
so made the call of shame & got a ride. (Only the 2nd time ever)

Went on my first group ride.

I bike commute 17 miles a day, so I kept up easily at the front of the pack. Didn't know all the group rider etiquette and audibles, so I fear I pissed off a few folks. No crashes, though.

More great FL Fall weather. Low humidity and just the right temps. Did the usually S. Tampa rides on Saturday and Sunday around Picnic Is. and Davis Is. for about 80 miles. Many other cyclist out enjoying the morning too.

Sat - Cat 4/5 Open and a Cat 4/5 35+ cross race. Back to back.

First race, hit the deck pretty hard on a transition from mud to pavement. Got a nice bit of road rash on my hindquarter as a reminder to take that turn a bit slower.

Second race, two dropped chains. About halfway through the second race, I was cramping pretty bad, but still had some juice left to finish the race.

I'll post some photos later tonight.

Sun - 50+ miles, about half of which was with the LBS. I'm paying for this today. Probably should not have gone so long/hard given the events of Saturday.

No pics Machka?

42 miles yesterday...22 of it into a strong headwind so it was slower/harder than normal.

I actually got to ride both days this weekend. I did 36m/58k on Saturday. Looped in and around two different golf courses in town. I usually ride Sunday morning, but had a Halloween party to go to Sat night and didn't know if I would be up to riding on Sunday. I did get home late, but still woke up at 7AM, so I joined the Performance bicycle Sunday group ride for another 33m/53k at a more leisurely pace.

That does sound interesting...and I am not racing. We'll see how this progresses.

Here are two photos from this weekend.

Photo two depicts what happens when the guy a few spots in front goes backwards on the hill. Fortunately, this was the only time this hill was a run-up.
