Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

8 months later I'm as fit as before the wreck, and my strength isn't far off. I started to feel good on the bike in August, just hit over 8000 miles for the year, and should finish this month with 1600 miles.

Getting into shape again wasn't easy, but once you get fit, the feeling is worth the work.
Holy macaroni, how do you do it? I am soooo close but soooo far away from my 4000 mile year. I can't fathom 8000 miles.

I got back on the bike just over a year ago after a 15 year break as three children were born. I was overweight and cycled all winter on the trainer. Set a century for a goal this year and completed it in 6:14 about three weeks ago. I have gotten off cholesterol medicine and lost over 30lbs.
I have become good friends with the owner of the LBS and during one conversation I asked him what was the worst hill in the area. He told me and so I started the challenge to ride Coppenheaffer hill without stopping. The first time I tried I got up the start of the three mile base breathing heavy. Then it turns into a cat 4 hill with grades between 17 and 24 percent. I rested before I hit the final climb. I rested three other times on the way up and thought my heart was going to beat out of my chest. I climbed this on a bi weekly basis and just tried to go a little further each time. The owner said to let me know when I had done it to celebrate with me. Well two months ago I tackled it and climbed the entire way. I know it will get easier when I lose the 40 lbs I still have to lose.
In one month I will ride 10 hours on the trainer to earn my knight of Sufferlandria award.
my goals for next year are several centuries and a 200 and 400 km brevet.
im not very fast but I have grown stronger over the year and look forward to growing further in the years ahead.
one day at a time and one mike at a time and enjoy the ride.
there is no do over.

Dating an Ironwoman, and not having children to look over, makes it a lot easier to find time to train.

8000 miles is nothing compared to a normal year for me. I should be around 13,000 miles by now.

What you recovered from is amazing. Inspirational.

All you guys rock. I haven't done a serious, serious hill yet. These are most of the big climbs in my area SRCC Elevation Profiles

Ive done Canyon, Chalk Hill, Graton Frei, Dutcher and a few others but haven't yet tackled Geysers or Pine Flat or Coleman Valley or King Ridge so I have a lot of work to do. Hoping at least to do a couple of them one day.

Very nice thread. Very encouraging indeed.

Just one question...why am I still fat? Fit fat, but fat nonetheless.

Thanks, but it sounds like nothing compared to what you've overcome. The whole time I was hospitalized, I thought of what you had accomplished, and looked forward to the recovery process.

You actually in the Boston area? I'm asking because I'll be on the Cape next summer and I'm really thinking we need to ride.
