Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Where did everyone go?

It's not winter yet, and it's not even cold, but it seems as though all of a sudden, there's less cycling going on. Group ride options and attendance are evaporating, folks aren't uploading anything to Strava,... So what's up?
This has got me to wondering whether folks have gone into hibernation, or have just switched activities - maybe it's the season for something else - basketball or hockey league? It's not ski season, and surely it isn't "indoor trainer" season yet, either.... Who knows?

By the way, the poll only applies to those who live where "wind chill" is a factor, and to those who ride for sport or recreation. Presumably if your livelihood depended on it, your rides wouldn't be on club training or cue sheet rides, and you wouldn't be posting to Strava.

I rode 15 miles in the rain today. I saw 3 or 4 other cyclists. About normal for the route I took.

I think I also saw a normal number of dog walkers and joggers. All antidotal. But maybe just a localized seasonal drop-off.

Oh and the answer is Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. That's where all the good posters went.

Free Bike 4 Kidz is my current excuse. I volunteer 5 days a week for 4 hours after work. We have something over 3500 bikes yet to clean, repair, and tune by early December.

At least I have my bike in the car so I can pretend I will take an hour break and ride.

Nope! I keep riding. The key is hydration and knowing when to stop - In June July and August I am a great believer in my Camelbak Mule and the discipline to not push it.

Last weekend we were travelling and couldn't take our bicycles with us.

But it's spring ... summer is coming ... and we're looking forward to lots more cycling.

I think what people do depends on how far south they live. Snow? & how much?

That's what long days with early mornings and late evenings are for.

In the fall, the group rides all dry up around here because they are mostly held in the evenings and the early sunset cuts too far into ride time for many. Cyclocross picks up until the snow flies, then its time for fat bikes, but both have a much smaller following than road cycling, paved touring, and recreational summer riding. Gravel grinding in the fall is becoming more popular but still has a relatively small following. In the city there are year round cycling commuters, but in the rural area where I am, I can go weeks without seeing another cyclist in Jan-Mar.

This is the time of year when you find out who the real cyclists are. All the faux TdF "racers" who you only see when the temp is 70F or higher are all gone. I like riding now for that reason alone.
