If you might be tempted by some Fulcrum Racing 5's, shoot me a PM.

I am not sure which level of Aksium I have owned for some number of years, purchased second hand from a fellow. They had come as the stock wheels on his Spec, I think I paid 100, maybe $150 for them. I have ridden them for years, and moved them to my son's bike when I scored a deal on some other wheels. I started riding them at around 260#, have never trued them, never had any issue with them. At one point I had 28 Hardcase Bontrager tires on them as well, so whatever that narrow rim won't hold a tire thing...pah.

Very good food for thought.

The responses here are nothing new and typical about Aksium. Negative responses: Can't hold a true for more than a few hundred miles. OR Positive Response: Excellent wheels, never had a problem, hold true for years, never breaks spokes.
When I was buying my first wheel upgrade, the mechanic I discussed it with turned me off due to the problems they had holding true. However, the folks I ride with that have them say they're excellent, problem free. I'm guessing, but I think it's based on age of the design. Mavic made improvements to the Aksium a few years ago. All the folks I know are riding the newer design and don't seem to have the problems holding a true as the older design. Also, I don't recall any of them meeting the Clydesdale criteria.
All I can add is, I bought a used set of Ksyrium Elites when I moved up. After truing the rear twice, they dialed in and never had a problem. They're on my back up bike now as I had an opportunity to upgrade to SLs. So I'm prejudice pro Mavic due to the excellent performance the Ksyriums have provided. I estimate about 8000 miles on the two sets and still going strong. Other than truing the rear wheel on the used set twice, I've never had to true any Ksyriums I've owned again. I'm a borderline Clyde at a hair under 200lbs.

I'm a Clyde and ride the Aksium as well as a set of Fulcrum and older Ultegra with Mavic CXP22.
Aksium are the 11 speed recent design and never had an issue with having to true them. I did replace the rear hub cassette and was able to replace it myself and price was very reasonable. Honestly at the price they are a great wheel but just feel hub is a little weak, though probably where they saved money. The Fulcrum are solid and I like the hub design more. Problem with both of these rims is proprietary spokes though I have never broken one. On century rides and next year in 200km + brevets I use the Ultegra and carry spare spokes.
