Wow!
I had branch go through one of my chainrings one time, took about two inches of teeth out.

You have my sympathies; I've recently had a plastic-bodied Campagnolo Xenon rear mech blow out exactly the same way, with the formed plastic around the hanger bolt just splintering - and nothing even touched the thing, as far as I can tell. Its time had simply come, as evidently has your derailleur's. It was indeed a fine opportunity to upgrade.

Man, that really sucks. Sorry for the bad luck.

Every time I see pics like that I get flashbacks of the kamikaze squirrels that have missed my wheels by inches. Not fun. Good thing the damage is limited to the rear derrailleur, and the biking gods have forced an upgrade upon you.

the pic proves there is a third party to this death, it looks like it's been taken from the top or a grassy knoll...

I managed to smack one at 35mph, barely stayed upright.

Normally a 2# squirrel should not do much damage, but the idea of kissing pavement because of it makes me sick. I tried to swerve in the past(gets scary depending on speed), now i just brace on and hope for the best.

Hmm, sounds familiar. Me thinks this is the attitude of some drivers when they see a cyclist. Brace and hope for the best.

Other than a couple of scratches on one black spoke they look OK Minor scratches on the chainstay (waa my beautiful white finish) and the brake pad is slightly rubbing on the rim 1mm, maybe the brake mount was slightly pushed out of alignment.
Btw whats the difference between the GS and SS versions of Shimano 105 5700 rear derailleur? I am looking for a replacement now, at least its only gonna be a $50 repair. Newbie here and I think I can do it myself, just dont know which I need GS or SS since it doesn't state in manual. TIA

Ouch, rough day. No damage to anything other than the RD, not even a bent spoke? Lucky you. I may now have a whole new respect for breezy plastic bags..
Edit: Definitely get that hanger checked out!
