Last year, having completed an Ironman within the required time limit, I accomplished my goal. This year, my name was again called out upon finishing; however, since the swim was canceled I did not accomplish my goal. Yesterday I had a goal of 80 miles but rode 79.77 so I did not accomplish my goal.
Either you do it or don't. Most likely you did the wisest thing in calling it quits.

Back in the 90's I started into Tri-training but my persistent ankle sprain issues nixed the running piece. And that was my entre' into cycling. Hard to sprain an ankle on a road bike - but maybe not impossible

FWIW, here is my final answer (from some game show whose name escapes me as I am not a TV kind of guy).
1) I am pleased with my effort and results
2) I did NOT achieve my goal, but were I to do this over again, would NOT try to have added those last 4 miles. Would have been bad judgment IMHO.
3) I am not going to try to stuff in another CENTURY try in the next week. There is a problem (cramps) to be solved here that is not solved.
4) So what has changed? My primary goal was to ride a CENTURY (not quite achieved). Secondary was to do that at 18mph or better (this was in the bag until about 90 miles - was at 18.3 mph somewhere around 85 miles). Had I achieved that the next step would have been the ULTRA hilly Six Gap Century next fall. So that one is down one place on the list. Next is a 'real century' at 18+ mph. Probably in the spring.
FINAL ANSWER!

if you can convince yourself that 96 equals 100 then yes, otherwise no.

96 miles isn't a true century, but that doesn't mean your ride wasn't a great accomplishment.
After my big wreck I went out for a long ride, and got home at 92 miles. I grabbed my lights and did 18 quick miles just to prove I could.
A few miles at that distance is just for a personal achievement.
96 miles is good enough to call it a century, unless it bothers you.

Your goal was 100 miles. Scientifically speaking that is only one significant digit. So your final result of 96.5 miles would be rounded to one significant digit, therefore 100 miles.
You did it!

Not true; a gps/bike computer can give accurate reading to the hundredth. Unless you calculated it by 19.25 mph for 5 hours, only one sig fig by hours you could then say 100 miles.

I am saying his acceptance limit only needed one Sig fig, his final answer. He may have been accurate to more but he only needed to report one.

I've had century distances be off by a couple miles. Bike computers work off wheel rotations and several things makes them vary from actual. A little bit becomes noticeable over 100 miles. It's rare you can ride 100 miles with non-interrupted GPS coverage too.

I've done a few organized centuries that were a few miles short of 100. Some people get very upset that they didn't do the total miles to get 100 and are so anal about it, they'll ride a few extra miles so their comp records it. For me, it's more about the ride and if a mile or two short, no big deal. I just did a century this weekend that was 105 miles. I heard last year they were a mile or two short and heard a bunch of complaining so added several extra miles to make sure it was over 100.

LOL. I've been trying to come up with a route that is precisely 100mi and that starts and finishes at the same location (a local pub, for pre- and post-ride beers). I want 100.0, not 99.9 or 100.1. My pre-ride had it at ~97mi so I've added what I think are exactly enough junk miles to get it right on, however I won't know until it is actually ridden (and do worry about variations in GPS recording/rounding/accumulating).

That might be the thing to do. While I'm mainly the intended audience for the ride (maybe ride it once a month through the spring), I'd like to be able to ride it with friends who won't see the junk miles at the end as being in the way of the beers at the pub (and short-cutting them out). If we had to finish with a mini-crit, that might keep spirits up.

Sound's like you rode a century to me. Congratulations. Not an easy ride. I bet you learned a few things about yourself and saw some interesting landscapes along the way. Next time ride an extra 4 miles to even everything out.
Cheers to you, buddy.

Zap, thanks for the kind words.
FWIW, my wife and I moved to California in 1995 (left in 2000). Long story but she had a traveling job and was stationed in Sacramento where she lived there for 9 months while I was selling our home in Kentucky and finagling a corporate transfer to California. I still remember spending a July 4th weekend in Sacto where it was almost 100 degrees at 10:00 a.m. My wife and I drove to San Francisco that morning (less than 2 hours by car) as a tourist kind of thing, and we both had to buy sweatshirts as it was in the low 60's in SF.
California is an amazing place. I would have stayed there but couldn't afford it. FWIW, we ended up living in Livermore (I was working in San Jose while my wife was traveling all over California in her job).
