Yes, the FD shifter cable & housing was replaced on the original bike, prior to replacing the chain ring.

I feel pretty confident in the errant pin theory, so that's good enough for me to have closure -- especially since my replacement bike has performed markedly better! I'm kinda kicking myself in the butt for not having taken a picture of the errant pin, though.
