Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Carbon wheelset or better groupset?

i recently purchased a specialized Allez with a claris groupset and generic aluminum rims with Claris hubs

I'm planning to use it for weekend long rides and some local races.
What do you think should I upgrade first?
Upgrade to an ultegra groupset or a carbon wheelset?

I have no problems with the claris.
The bike weighs about 20 lbs right now.

Pls help me decide. Tnx

Ride it then designate it as the backup bike when you can afford a better one.

Wait until something breaks or wears out. Then upgrade that part.

Posts two and three above pretty much cover all bases.

Unless you get so fast that you start riding the cat 3 pack off your wheel - then get some deep carbon wheels for the aero benefit.

Until then, just ride your bike. Spending more money on it won't make you a better rider.

Carbon wheels, but make sure to get light ones. No heavier than 1500g for the set.

I'd probably go with some Reynolds Assaults SLG + Continental Attack Force tires.

It'll drop quiet a bit of rotating weight from your bike, that'll make you faster for sure.

A new group set won't do anything for you, unless your having problems with your current group.

I'd go with wheels. They will look cooler than a group set will. Check out Flocycling.com or boydcycling.com. Boyd is having a great black Friday deal where you could recoup a decent chunk of your money by selling the free wheels they throw in. Several people on here already requested someone looking for carbons to deal with.

This is pretty solid advice.

This.

Join a club and work a quality program with lots of seat time.
It's not about the hardware and never has been.

Definitely wheels. They should make the bike feel better, should be faster, and should look better.

And with all that working in your favor, it could help you achieve new heights as a rider.

Definitely wheels.

Oh, it has always been about the hardware. That's why derailleurs were invented.

Has something changed? The strong, fit and fast do well with or without the latest doo-dads.

Also, on the velodrome I don't recall seeing a derailleur.

There is no technical substitute for long miles, hard work and dedication to the craft of going fast in racing.
A good solid machine of reasonable quality that fits properly and the willingness to put in the work are what are required for basic racing competence and good results. Not "upgrades" of the hardware, upgrade your program and have at it.

If you wanted a bicycle with Ultegra, why didn't you just buy that in the first place instead of buying a bicycle with Claris?

Becoming fitter and smarter than your competitors is what gives you the edge over them, not your bicycle.

The best advice I could give the OP is to RIDE MORE and worry about your equipment later.

why is buying something you like a bad idea if it doesn't instantly make you 2 mph faster?

I'm as fast as I'm gonna ever be, should I sell my Dura-Ace 9000 and my Bontager Aeolus wheels

and get me a Walmart beater?
