Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Showroom condition is silly. I've never heard of such a thing.

Bike weight is the bike with everything but the computer and mount.

Yep that works too. I didn't mean you didn't get a good deal. Just trying to get the information about the Spesh site into print. Clumsy! I will say I tried two saddles from the Spesh site recently. Rode both of them for a few days and sent them back. Money "cheerfully" refunded! I will say that Spesh must have a couple of fulfillment centers, because the origin addresses for the two saddles was different. And the costs were different too. I didn't pay shipping or tax for one of them. And both I think for the other one. And neither was in Texas. Weird.

Glad you were able to make a good deal. I love ebay!

I hear ya, but if you ask a manufacturer what their bike weighs (or read the weight in a catalog), you will get the number for what I call showroom condition. It doesn't have to make sense, but it exists. Some people say bike weight is the weight they way THEY take it out for a ride with tools, and water, and the kitchen sink. That makes sense to them, but provides no basis for comparison by another cyclist. I like the showroom or catalog weight number, because it allows me to compare to what I could buy off the rack. The extras that I add on are going to be the same on any bike.

Honestly, this makes no sense. You will have variation of "showroom condition" between manufacturers and showrooms. All their weights are BS.

No one who's legitimately interested in their bike weight will weigh it with tools and water.

Okay, but if you go into a shop to look at bikes, say you ask to have one weighed for you. Most shops keep an electronic bike balance hanging near the repair shop or the register. So they weigh it as is. I won't call it in "showroom condition", but that is what it is. Now how does that compare to your bike weighing condition. You need to have the weight of your set of add ons, pedals, cages, whatever you think should be included to add to the weight shown on the balance to get a number you can use for comparison. So I still say the two numbers are the showroom weight and the weight of YOUR standard kit of add ons. With those two numbers you can compare any bikes. I get you don't believe the catalog claims. No problem with that, it is often possible to weigh the bike in person. But in a shop they aren't going to assemble a bike with your kit of add ons to weigh it for you. Hence the utility of the showroom weight and add-on kit weight.

Robert is not a weight weenie. He's an organic chemist.

Bike weight is determined by a build sheet and a final weight photo. Add up all the weights and the final weight should equal the parts. Add or subtract bits as needed. Showroom condition my ass.

Organic chemists can build light bikes too. Sniff.

Damn right they should!

Psst, psst. By the way, you can weigh them before they are trued and tensioned. Loose spokes weigh the same as tight spokes.

Simple as that.

I should be more concerned with weight, but for some reason, that thought never took hold. Either way, with the Rails and the Quarq, the NP came in at 15 lbs. 14 oz. I was happy. The November is 16.5, which is surprising. I thought it was lighter.

If a showroom can't last a 100 mile ride, or crazy sprinting then it is useless. I take it the showroom pedals are ao light so they lose function.

If you consider no pedals at all to be too light to function, I guess so.

I guess when someone says heavy pedals must go, I take it as lighter pedals take their place. Well I'm not right.

I care and I don't care. I know myself well enough that if the SLC-SL ends up being my favorite, I'll want it built up like the R3SL. I spent a long time figuring out parts on that bike. Might as well do it now.

Automotive terms really don't translate all that well to bikes. Showroom condition sounds goofy, but I think my least favorite is "stock".

What exactly is stock on a bicycle? IME bike makers/marketers change components throughout a run of built bikes and many people buy framesets and pick they components themselves... so what is stock?

"Hey honey," my wife called from the kitchen, "the next time you're at the hardware store, can you see if they have new drip trays for the stove burners?"

"What? Why?" I asked incredulously.

"These are dirty."

"So clean 'em, honey - we don't need to get new ones."

"Look at them, they're horrible - they're never going to come clean," she reasoned.

"Gimme a break - let me see 'em," I grumbled.

I was about 10 minutes in to the elbow grease and scouring pads before I started to suspect that I'd been had.

...I'm a little jealous. I spent the day on Alcatraz, viewing an art installation that was much more exciting in the conceptualization than in the execution. Nice day out on the Bay, though.
