Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I occasionally drop you guys and gals for a good book.

But only for a day or two, 'cause if it's good, I'll finish it quickly.

Sorry.

I'm still working my way through the Dresden Files. I picked up the new Patrick Rothfuss book when it was released, but at just shy of 200 pages it was a very quick read.

Wait - he put out a different book when we're all waiting on the 3rd KKC book? I like his writing, but he strikes me as somewhat of a doooshie person.

Yeah, it's a novella based on Auri. It doesn't really tell a story though... it's... odd. Worth reading though. It takes place between the span when Auri comforts Kvothe near the beginning of WMF and the meeting on the rooftops when Elodin catches them together.

...think of it as a week in the life of a cracked namer.

Nice.

In a "small world" context, I was just wondering this morning if I had missed the release of the third book, and thought that I should re-read the first two.

On a completely different vein, I recently read all of the Craig Johnson "Longmire" books. I am a fan of the series, and the books were better (as is often the case).

I refuse to wonder about or look in to the progress being made by either Rothfuss or GRRM. I know that it'll just make me mad.

Different genre, but ('specially with the passing of Banks) I'm a little depressed to say that I only have one unread Culture novel left. I'm kinda saving it/don't want to come to the end.

In my experience any dinner that was good the night before is DAMN good the next day for breakfast. The only question is, "to heat, or not to heat."

I am always amused by those (who shall remain nameless, but since we are empty-nesters you must know who I am talking about) who react to leftover dinner for breakfast with, "Ewww, how can you eat that?" I mean, how can you not?

Rothfuss is definitely a slow writer who does extensive editing and rewriting before he releases his books. They are damned good though. I've met him a few times and he is a really nice guy. He lives in central Wisconsin and I went to a book signing he was doing there when NOTW first came out (before it was cool) and I was almost the only one there so I spent a good 3 hours talking with him.

Does one have to have a beard to be allowed to write that stuff? I had never heard of those guys so looked them up. Verrry interesting. Perhaps I will dabble a little.

I am a stauch disciple of the "Breakfast food is for breakfast, leftover dinner is for lunch, at the earliest" school.

I think the beard just comes from secluding yourself for extended periods of time. While it isn't necessary it is a common side effect.

But will my wife thank you? You have absolutely no idea what oats do to me. In ain't pretty. For a while I tried to lower my cholesterol with oat bran muffins. Baaad idea, really baaad idea. We had to get a ozone deodorizer to return the house to normal.

I've never watched that, nor do I want to, but it might be interesting since Rothfuss is a bleeding heart liberal college professor whack-a-doodle and those guys on Duck Dynasty are ultra conservative religious wing-nuts.

You have an ATM in your house that dispenses oats!
