Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shouldn't you be worried if you don't know how good he is with his hands?

Or something. But wouldn't you all have felt unsettled without knowing quite why if I hadn't produced one more double entendre on this last day of 2014?

Well, we've not even been together two full years and I kinda believe he always holds something in reserve. Sort of like the "for emergencies only" gear.

My paycheck got deposited early and I suppose I should be happy that I am employed and getting- finally- near full-time hours again. Instead I am bemoaning the fact it is nearly $100 less than the check I got on December 4th. (It is just about the same at the one I got on the 18th.) Walmart, unlike any other retail outlet I've seen, cuts everyone's hours back during the weeks leading up to Christmas. Last year I was seasonal at Target and they hired so many other seasonal people that it was impossible for shoppers to go more than six feet without being asked if they needed assistance. Not so at Walmart. Even more amazing to me was how the store understaffed the Toy department. The head office made a promise to customers that more checkstands than ever would be open from 12 to 6 on the weekends and all during the week of Christmas. Our store decided to be overachievers and have every register open during those hours. That meant pulling people from the various departments and that sometimes there was no one assisting in Toys until 6pm and no one available to answer questions about or help with/sell the bikes. This after I spent six months trying to encourage people to shop with us and to build good will in the community. "Could I get these handlebars/seat adjusted?" or "Could I get these tires pumped up?" Well, you could if our assembler wasn't ringing up groceries. Yep. I've spent the last month on the register and will be there at least another two weeks. (In fact, they asked me if I wanted to change positions permanently. I said "No" although I appreciated that they thought I'd be getting a raise by moving up two pay levels.) I'm not sure why they schedule me up there since I am toward the middle/bottom of the acting cashiers in terms of speed. I keep hearing that I rank high in entertainment and people skills. (Everyone who's been here for the last year know what BS that is.) Cuz that's what you want from a cashier: entertainment. As opposed to quickness. And there was much jollity yesterday when people saw I had written the most used produce PLUs on my left palm in order to save time. LoP said "If you're not a cashier, why do you care how fast you are?" All I could say was "Do you know me at all? If I'm going to do it, I want to be spectacular."

In other news, I'm one of the few acting cashiers to have learned to do returns/refunds/exchanges at the register. Which is essentially what they do at the Customer Service counter. That means that, leaving out the departments you have to have super special training to do like Vision Center and Pharmacy, there are only four non-management areas of the store I haven't worked in. And I still haven't had a chance to learn to make the donuts.

Stay tuned...

Oh and happy (early) 2015 wishes to all. Spending the last year here with you guys was absolutely worth the price of admission.

Haha, she has a 3 wheeler that so will put on the road 2-3 a week. She also hits the gym about 3 times, probably more than me.

I do expect a severe pedal shortage in 2015. You heard it here first.
