Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Cycling/Exercise/Sports Reports - Dec 6/7

Tell us about your cycling on this first weekend of December. Inside or outside? Long or short? Solo or in groups? Sunshine or snow?

Or did you get involved in other sports this weekend?

Saturday ... well, actually, the whole past week ... we've hardly done anything in the way of exercise. Too busy!! Life gets in the way sometimes.

No cycling this week unfortunately.

Working on my graduation thesis is depleting my energy... I did go to the gym 3 times this week and had soccer practice, so I'm getting my workouts, but I just can't find the motivation to go on the trainer in the evening (outside is hardly option with the weather lately).

Maybe next week I will plan two trainer rides as soccer will stop until last week of january.

315km brevet yesterday.
Did really well considering I only had three hours sleep and did the whole ride solo. Started nice but got hot and windy through the day and rained a little at the end.

Fri: 20mi on bike path. 40 and sunny to start.. got a bit colder when the sun started going down. ran into a guy i see a lot on his hand bike who has MS. Said he got a new carbon layback trike.. can't wait to see it.

Sun: hopefully group ride but the weather is not looking good.. so may have to settle for going to watch the Cross race in RI.

Sunday -- we got out for a 4 km walk down to the beach and back.

It is summer here now, but you'd hardly know it. So cool, dreary, drizzly, misty ... and it has been like that for over a week now. Just completely uninspiring for cycling.

However, I did get some photos of our local beach ... where we walked ...

And we live somewhere up there ...

Did a night time rural ride around home tonight. Fantastic riding/walking out here at night.

I did 50.7 miles using the guadalupe trail twice. The weather was foggy and partly cloudy with light winds. I saw rc airplanes flying in a nearby park, i counted about 40 cyclists on the trail.

I rode for about 15 minutes on trainer Saturday. Sunday I rode 12.9 miles on my new road/CX bike and getting accustom to new riding position. I also swap saddle from my mtn bike to new bike. Next month I hope get professional fitted to new bike.

Yes ... unfortunately he DNF'd because of the weather ... wet and slippery. They determined it was too much of a risk ... didn't want to crash and have an injury on a minor race like that.

1st cyclocross race.

Should have signed up for the c level, but went for master's 55+. Some fast guys there.

Good muddy fun, which revealed the shortcomings of my training plan (not nearly enough running, wind sprints, stair climbs)

#painface ! that is how cross should feel I think.

Sun: cold and windy as hell.. 20F windchill at 10am when ride was supposed to go, so I slept in. Watched the Cross races online that were in RI.. both races had sprint finishes.. womens had photo finish by inches.. that is pretty sick.

Delightful group ride led by the Gruppo Sportivo Gran Fondo New York. They're social "training" rides more or less along the course of the Gran Fondo that takes place in May. Only about 40 miles officially, and with the C group, but the first half was a little challenging, what with substantial headwinds. But we weren't allowed to pass the leader, so that helped. On the way back, though, the leader said I could go ahead and pass him as we climbed the biggest hill. Managed 10th place of 202 for the month - that was fun. but maybe those other guys weren't huffing and puffing once they got to the top.
Having the tailwind on the way back was sweet, too.

Finally got in a full weekend of riding. Saturday I went to Picnic Is. and back home. Not as long a ride as usual, but my back was killing me. Sunday was strange weather. Kind of a light fog/rain, so it was mostly soggy and cool. I headed out to Upper Tampa Bay trail. On the good side the poor weather meant there was hardly anyone about so I had the whole trail practically to myself.

I rode the trainer twice this weekend. Saturday I did the Sufferfest workout video "The Wretched" and Sunday I did the Sufferfest video "Revolver." I must admit I wasn't feeling Revolver and petered out towards the end. That is a hard workout.

Toy Drive Ride

What a great weekend for cycling, Team ZMotion and Trek Bikes Florida had a Toy Drive Ride for Kids In Distress. Perfect weather too, 78 degrees, sunny, no wind... and best of all, lots of toys for the kids

Perfect weather for a 48 mile ride with the appropriate clothing, 25f 10-20 wind, dark night. Got a flat, thought my hands would get too cold without the gloves when changing the tube. They did not get uncomfortably cold when fixing the flat. Since I was stopped I got a snack and drank. When just standing and eating my hands got pretty cold. No problems, just put the gloves back on. I was in the middle of nowhere, it the woods. At least five people stopped to see if I was ok. That was nice. One woman said her husband would take me and the bike home in his truck.

One of my old friends says "there's no bad weather, just inappropriate clothing". He trains ski instructors in Maine on the slopes, and works with disabled skiers. He's right.

We had an interesting weekend. On Saturday we took our tandem out on a new group ride series, 33 miles and 2000' climbing. We were riding with 25 singles, some experienced, some not. We had trouble keeping up with the leaders on the climbs, and then had to be really slow on the descents and flats to stay with the group. That was relatively unsatisfactory, so for our Sunday group ride (48.5 miles, 2000') with our usual group we started 10 minutes early and rode solo. Kind of an odd thing to do on a group ride, but we could ride our own pace and stayed ahead of the group the whole way, even though we were climbing more slowly than they were on their singles. Plus we didn't have to beat the crap out of ourselves trying to stay with the group on the climbs. So I think we'll keep doing that for the near future, at least until we start coming in way ahead of everyone else.

Both rides 45°-50°, cloudy, wet roads, a little rain, and now a really dirty bike.

What fun!

We had a motorcycle toy run in our area this weekend (didn't go, just saw the signs), and I wondered if anyone organises bicycle toy runs ... I'm pleased to hear that they do!
