Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I just picked up a pair of Sidi Wires and so far I'm loving them. This is my third pair of Sidis and they work for me. I have some issues with my feet - flat and with a bunion on the left side, not to mention size 13. The Bonts look snazzy but moldable insoles mean nothing to me since I have custom orthotics that I use. My Ergo 3's were nice but it was what the fitter did when I purchased my last bike that really sorted out my feet issues. He discovered a leg length discrepancy and put a lift and 2 wedges on the right side and 3 wedges on the left. He also put some spacers on the left pedal to keep my ankle from clipping the crankarm. Dude is a wizard!
I've only gone for three shorter rides so far but the BOA closures make for a better fit and they feel slightly lighter than the Ergo 3's.

The ability to Mold the Bonts goes way deeper than just molding the insoles. The Bont footbed is like a moldable bathtube around your foot. The sides come up all around about a half inch which is all moldable, not just the insole. Most Importantly, the Bonts have a SHAPE like no other which allow your feet to spread out. Even someone with special orthotics can benefit from Bont shoes. They make them in narrow, standard and wide widths. Not saying you should drop the sidi's and get Bonts, I'm just giving some information.

Good to know. I don't plan on buying any more shoes anytime soon, the Wires were a major splurge, but when the time comes I'll give them a looksee. To be honest the Bonts just came on my radar recently so I really don't have an opinion one way or the other.

For sure. Those Wires are GREAT shoes also as long as they fit your foot right. Cheers!

I need new shoes. I have a size 14 foot/shoe. I think I will get Sidi again. I can't see to find anything else in that size. I like the Sidi.

I wouldn't worry too much, oven thermostats are +-10f. If you're concerned, get an oven thermometer, and at 170, turn the oven off and let the temp drift down

Well the shoes came half a size too small, I think. I tried without molding with thin socks and my toe was in contact with the front. I'm going to return them and get the + from another store where I found them for cheap. However, not sure if they are wide or not... could be an issue.

I have S-Works and Sidi Wires. The S-Works are about as light as anything out there and are great shoes. I'd say I like the Sidis a little better though. I like how the boa system goes all the way down the shoe to the toes whereas the S-Works have a velcro strap. That may be what makes them better for me, I don't know for sure. The top shelf Scott and Lake shoes use the full boa system as well I see.

Luis, Congrats on the chairmanship and great photos!

Hope all goes well with the return and re-sizing. Definitely the downside for those of us who cannot go try on shoes...

I'm returning them and waiting some. I'm actually going to try them around. I dont want to order another pair from the uk and have to pay more return shipping. I really want a pair of sidi wires. Do they come in wide?

Thanks, fantastic price via Ribble as well. Tried to use their christmas promotion code as well but no luck!

Did wires get narrower over their other models? My 4-5 year old Genius shoes fit well but the wires are tight
Always wore 42.5 but them seem narrow along toes
A 43 causes feet and toes to rise on the upstroke

Do you size "down" and "tight" with idea better to be molded to pedal and the shoes will loosen up or go with bigger size and slip around a bit?
any other solutions like a new insert or something to take up the extra room?

Just wanted to resurrect this thread and see if anyone has purchased the new R171 and R321?

I'm tempted to get either.

I kept the bonts, but those Shimanos sure look nice. And like everything Shimano makes I am sure they are sturdy and good quality.

I have had a couple of 'shoe issues' the past few months.

Previously, I'd had Shimano shoes (R087 & R106) in sz46 - which my feet swam in a fair bit - even with thicker socks.

In October, I grabbed some Giro Factors new off a local pro in sz 45 and they were quite tight, but I figured they would improve a little with age. A couple of factors influenced my next two months of knee pain - including the ultra-stiff sole of the Giros, as well as the fact that they were simply too small.

In mid-December, I bought some Shimano R171 in sz45 (wide fit) and after a bit of time dialling the cleat position in, they have been fantastic. They are stiff enough to transmit the power, yet are light and fit my feet well.

I looked at the R321s, but the only real difference is their moldability and different upper material - which did not sway me to paying double the price of R171s.

I reckon the R171s are not too bad a shoe at all.

cheers

thanks.

My Bont Vaypor will turn 2 years old this year (I think). I love them but they're god awful for casual-semi spirited group rides. It's too stiff. For racing they're perfect but I want something forgiving while training.
