Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

So I need some advice on this Road Bike I found on Craiglist here Locally!!!

So I am trying to get my first Road Bike to start my new hobby!! And I really know nothing about this stuff, all I know is that I want a nice bike at a good price to get going and start cranking some rides!!

Here is the link what do you think of it for the price with how much he has used the bike??? Trek 2200 Men's Road Bike - 58CM

Also I was checking out another site that was doing reviews and they said that a legit entry bike right at the $1k price point is a Specialized Allez Sport? Would that be better? Although its double the price I just don't know, any info would be awesome!!!!

Also brand new to the Forum so I will do an introduction once I pick up a bike !

Welcome! The first very important question is how tall are you?

Perfect! I would go check the bike out, but I bet you could get him down to 350ish. I don't think you need the triathlon bars, but that is personal preference and you can always take them off after you buy it.

I agree, and the shoes won't fit, for the price though do you think its worth it, or should I step up and get a new bike? Does it all sort of depend on how it rides when I go try it out?

I think it would be a great first bike. I think it's a good price (might be a little high, but you can haggle him down to 350ish, because I don't think you want the shoes/bars/or pedals). I wouldn't buy an expensive bike because you have no idea if you'll like the hobby. If you go and buy a brand new 2000 dollar Cervelo, and realize you don't like the hobby, you will lose money. The reason I wouldn't jump right into clip ins (the pedals) is because it locks your feet into the pedals. If you are not used to them you have to remember to click out whenever you stop, and if you're just getting into cycling then you have enough going through your mind. Also, with clip ins if the fit of the bike isn't perfect it could lead to pain in your knees or hips. But if you're in Scottsdale you are probably able to afford losing money on a nice bike Like you said it all depends on how the bike feels when you take it out. Where do you live in the Valley?

South Scottsdale I run a Chocolate and Energy bar business here called Stone Grindz, and no I am no rich Scottsdale Yuppie, trust me on that haha, fresh out of College and not much expendable income right now, I just ride my mountain bike everywhere, and want to add some good fitness to my life, and I just love bike riding! Always have! hmm I added another bike that I found on craigslist also, but I don't much like the color, with the green on it like that, I kind of like the more oldschool look of the dark blue Trek . I will test drive it soon I just sent him an email!

I graduated from ASU in 2012! If you don't have a lot of money to play with like the yuppies I think the $400-600 range is perfect for you. My first bike was an old 1980's steel Nishiki that worked for me. You really don't ever NEED (wanting a brand new bike is different) a new bike. You get a much better deal on used. Where is Stone Grindz?

We work the farmers market all over the valley here, check out our website at stonegrindz.com . GF and I started the business, just wanted to bring some quality wholesome snacks to people and its been taking off quite well!

I will keep you updated on everything, does the first bike that I posted that blue Trek have relatively nice components?

He doesn't list the front/rear Derailleurs, but the brakes are 105's which are good, and the shifters are sti's which I had on a Cannondale and liked a lot.

The second bike is a 2009 Trek 1.5. Probably retail price between $1000-1100. Five years newer which is nice, mix of Sora and Tiagra components, which aren't as nice as the 1st bike but run fine if you keep them tuned up. Probably worth closer to $500 vs 600. Tuned up I don't think you'd notice a difference between the two, so I'd say get the 2200 as it has more extras and lower price.

Also I'm leery of anyone who lists a bike without noting model, etc. Hate to assume but to me it means you don't know much about your bike, and are less likely to have taken care of it. Flip side is they may not have ridden it much and you could get a steal.

Just my two cents.

And if I can get the first bike as atallen223 said for about $350 that would be the safer play here right?

I would agree, but at your stage I would also take a bunch of bikes for a test ride. You will notice subtle differences in fit/fee, and those subtle differences will become prominent on the longer rides. I think everybody would agree that when you are trying to get into the sport you should buy a used bike.

The seller has the specs listed for a 2004 model, which also came in blue. His bike is a 2002 model and does not have the carbon stays as he lists.

He lists the bike as having a standard 53/39 crank, but unless my eyes are deceiving me, which is always a risk now that I'm on the bad side of 60, the bike pictured has a triple. Which might be a better feature for you, with a 12-25 9 speed rear, if you're a new rider and you have hills to contend with.

I don't know how you feel about it, but I don't trust a Seller who uses a catalog photo of the wrong item and the wrong factory description of an item in an ad, and then the Seller does not tell you that the photo used to represent the item is not the same item that he is selling.

Yes, there are two photos of a different bike besides the catalog (2004) photo, and I take it that that is the (2002) real bike. Doesn't look like the condition is that great. I would be hesitant to spend that much money on a bike that old and used that looks like it needs tires. I think $600 is too much for a not so special 13 year old bike, when you can find newer Trek models advertised for sale for much less money on Craigslist.

My 2003 Trek is a very nice bike, even by today's standards. I think the 2200 for $300 and better components is a better deal than newer bike with Sora/Tiagra at twice the price. If you can, ride them both. First rule of selecting bikes is that fit is the number one criteria.

I guess it all depends on what price you can get it. I do agree that the first bike is better, condition pending. if in decent shape, I would go as high as 400.

I would agree that the 1st bike is a better choice, and maybe asking only $100 over a really good price. I think the 2nd bike appears to be less well kept up, and the seller has more unrealistic expectations about it's value.

I found a couple of other bikes I wanted to have you guys check out to see what is going to be the best bang for the buck so I can prioritize what I go and try out... The guy that is selling the Trek 2200 has not emailed me back yet... Grrr so check these out also for me if you would!!!

Cannondale Road Bike ( 58cm) w Ultegra

Motobecane Record Road Bike with Carbon Fork Sram APEX/Rival - LG/XL

Used Scott Speedster 1 58cm Ultegra Road bike

Masi Alare Road Bike

2012 GT Series 2 Road Cycle

There so as you can tell a bunch have showed up, so if you have some time to really help me out as I really don't know what to look for I just need to make sure they are all legit and what price to haggle at on the ones worth checking out!!! You guys are awesome for all the help so far !!
