What Are Your Cycling Goals for 2015?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In no order
- double my mileage from 2014 so 2000 miles or more
- do a true century ride
- ride more and ride more hills
- increase from a C to a B rider
- ride more often with the bike club

Now that would be an interesting statistic to look at from year-to-year. The annual pissing contest with the guys could take on a new dimension. Does Garmin or Strava keep track of that?

In the interests of being a bit more regular with our cycling, one of our goals is to do a metric CAM.

We were toying with the idea of doing an imperial CAM, but with my asthma, the hills in the area, and my decreased fitness, 100 miles is doable but takes a long, long time. I'm slow these days. But a metric CAM might be a more realistic goal this year and would motivate us to keep the fitness up. And we are not limited to 100 km rides ... we could do longer rides if we wanted.

Is it really that mountainous? I had never thought about it too much, but pictured it like the Australian Outback. Someday I want to ride across Australia. I may have to add Tasmania to the list.

Hardly anyone lives in the Australian Outback. The vast majority of the population live around the edges of the country ... where it is green and hilly and even mountainous. The Great Dividing Range runs down the east coast ... and in winter, the southern half of those mountains are snow topped.

And Tasmania is sort of a miniature version of Australia's mainland ... hills and mountains around the edges and somewhat flatter in the middle. In the Hobart area, where we live, there is hardly any flat ground. Most rides are half climbing and half descending. We actually drive to various locations to find some flatter terrain to ride on.

Looking down at Hobart from near the top of Mt Wellington (click photo for lots more):

I don't know that you could really get 350,000 ft of climbing in a week ... I was exaggerating a bit ... but Mt Wellington is 1271 metres (4170 feet) and you can cycle from sea level to the top if you felt so inclined (and some people do feel so inclined, there are often cyclists riding up there). Do that climb 84 times, and you're there.

And speaking of goals ... I have had it in the back of my mind that I'd like to cycle up to the top of Mt Wellington at least once. Maybe it will happen this year, but so far I'm still working on the hills right around the area where we live.

This is the next street over from us and I can barely walk that let alone cycle it. We measured it at 18%. And again, click photo for more if you're interested.

1. Five double centuries
2. Complete all 5 passes of the Death Ride, 130 mi/15000 ft
3. Complete Planet Ultra KOM Challenge, which is 3 climbing rides (100-120 mi, 10000-14000 ft) in a 6 week period of time
4. Logistics permitting, also complete our club's KOM Challenge, similar to the Planet Ultra one

Thats all.

1. Make a decent showing at the Gran Fondo New York in May - e.g., finish ahead of a few of the guys who start ahead of me - shouldn't be too hard, since I'm sure there will be some folks in their 30's or 40's who won't have trained as much as this guy in the 50+ group starting in the back
2. Finish with the field a time or two in local races in the park - maybe even get a top 10 - a podium is too much to hope for.
3. Ride safe and stay uninjured.
4. Keep working on bike handling skills - descents especially.
5. Stop wasting so much $$ on gear and kit. Not off to a good start on that, since I just ordered another set of fenders just hoping they will actually fit, and a pair of winter/rain shoes.

The big one is riding across America this summer: Petoji.net

On top of that, I'm going to do a century per week and I want to do one more Everesting ride.

Clip-on aero bars and a set-forward seatpost. Maybe some aero wheels.

1. encourage more people to ride with our bike club
2. develop new safe and scenic routes for the club
3. plan and build my town's section of a regional MUP
4. encourage my town to endorse a "complete streets" program
5. work with state legislators and the DMV to remove inconsistencies between the state's laws and its drivers manual
