What Are Your Cycling Goals for 2015?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

OK, I've been thinking about goals more, and here's something of a summary ...

At the moment we have one main goal ... ride a Metric CAM (at least one 100K each month).
Some of those metric centuries may be longer rides ... I'm hoping we'll get a few imperial centuries in there ... maybe even a 200K ... and just possibly a 300K ... but the base goal is at least one 100K each month.

I'm also tossing around a few secondary goals ...

-- maybe a climb up Mt Wellington. A person could cycle from sea level to the top of Mt Wellington (1271 metres) ... several cyclists do that each year. Some do it several times. From where we might park to the top of Mt Wellington and back would be about 40 km, so that's 1271 metres up in 20 km (average 6.35%, I think) ... and then, of course, a long decent back down again.

-- I'd like to do a 1000 km month at least once this year ... that might not happen until October or November, but I'll see what I can do.
https://www.bikeforums.net/long-dista...challenge.html

-- I'd like to average 100 km/week over the whole year. The last two years, I've been averaging just a bit over 50 km a week. Some weeks have been really good, but there has also been a lot of time off the bicycle for one reason or another.

Well, our "one main goal" is off the list ... already. Rowan has been so busy with work ... he has had 1 day off in January so far. And I'm still on "no strenuous exercise" doctor's orders.

However, we still plan to get as many 100K+ days in as we can this year.

2015 goals:

- 200 miles in 1 day in June (Double down to the beach from Burlington, NC to Wilmington, NC).
- make it through the 56 miles of IM70.3 Augusta and still be able to run 13.1 afterwards.
- Hang with the "A Group" of my Wednesday evening rides consistently (last year I was only able to hang on once for a 22 mile ride).
- Get my Dad (53) as hooked as I am to cycling and ride as many miles as we can together (got his first bike since he was in college last week).

How did you do with your goals in 2015

These were my 2015 goals ...

A pair of surgeries in January 2015 took me out of the running for the first goal. But we did end up riding 3 metrics and 2 imperial centuries.

We haven't done Mt Wellington yet.

My biggest month was November with 544 km.

And I ended up with 3706 km, which works out to about 71 km/week, so that is an improvement on the last couple years.

Other than that, stay safe, keep the shiny side up and the rubber side down, etc.
Mission accomplished! Been there, done that, got the jersey (actually two jerseys, one for framing, and a finishers' pin).

Also, kept the shiny side up and the rubber side down for a little over 5100 miles in 2015. I did a bit more traveling for work in 2015 so my commute miles were down a bit; I'd like to say 2016 will have less traveling for work, but I think it'll be about the same (if not more).

Did my MS150 ride last year...probably won't do it again. Did 3 centuries...may do one but not sure. May concentrate more on shorter distance/higher speed rides...dunno.
It was pretty much a "dunno" year. I didn't exceed my previous year's goal due to 6 weeks off the bike after falling on a rain ride and breaking my clavicle. Didn't do a century...didn't necessarily ride faster either. A very wet spring kept early season mileage down and the second half of the year was pedestrian at best.

I'll add that I should have included "lose weight" as one of my goals. I wasn't even particularly thinking of that ... figured I might make some attempt to lose 5 or 10 kg over the year. I never imagined I'd lose 26 kg (57 lbs) and drop to a weight I haven't seen since about 2003/2004 when I was at my peak randonneuring fitness level!!
