Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

...sadly yes. It was quite taxing.

...my word. The idea that a person can live reasonably happily sans cellphone in 21st Century America is a lot more controversial than I thought .

I have to go to the market now, riding on a bicycle cycle made of steel, that was made in the 60's, has only 3 speeds, and is without a computer, GPS, or power meter.
This is what it's like, being retired and on a fixed income, with nowhere to turn for solace and succor in an uncaring modern world.

+1,000 I have great respect for anyone willing to pin a number on and do the distance. There is no shame for the willingness to put it all out there, no matter where you finish, or who finishes before you. Just the fact that they are willing take the time to train and prepare themselves for a race is honorable.

Yeah its not normal, most racers ride a 53/39 or something like that up front. I don't and run a 34/50 due to where I live and the routes I ride. If I ran a 53 up front I might of had to run a 15 in the back. During roll out they said I was super close to failing with 50-14, I thought that was strange because people have run a 52-14 and passed before. Maybe it is because my tires are taller than average, but I only run 23's so I don't know.

They hadn't invented stairs back then. Boots either.

Doesn't TH and P&R provide the solace and succor?

If not, I'm shocked. Shocked I tell you!

If it was tested and not just the nominal combinations like 53 front/14 rear/23mm tires, what kind of testing did they do to tell that you were really "close"?

It's a roll out measurement of gear inches. I think the process is a measurement of how far the bike moves in one revolution of the crank or something like that. They mark the longest allowed distance (tallest allowed gear) out on the ground and roll the bikes through it.

Annoyed. Back home to a lovely sunny day in LA. Mid 70s. Texted the boys, they were out doing a long ride this am, I was supposed to meet them around noonish for a few more hours. Just got a text that they gave up and went home due to
strong wind gusts.

You all know I'm going out anyway. It's just a matter of trying to figure out when the winds will be lighter. Ride now or hope they follow the forecast and die down a bit.

I'll probably take a look at wind direction once I'm home from the airport and see if I can pick something sheltered.

You can run really any gear combo you like, if it rolls out under the limit. They put it in the hardest gear, put one crank at 90 degrees and measure how far it takes for the crank to return to the original position. It must be under 26 feet, if the crank does not come back to 90 degrees in 26 feet, your gearing is too hard and you get dq'ed

The marginal improvement of my Nokia Lumia Icon over my old Nokia 3390 Gold from college (nevermind a damn landline stuck on the wall) is far greater than from my S1 to an S5.
