Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another snow storm 8 to 12 inches. Annoying. And my generator will not start. Very annoying. $900 frigging bucks.

If it is a Craftsman, find the oil level sensor (a wire coming from the oil pan) and sever it. Known fault that prevents the generator from starting.

Wednesday I was riding with one of the princes. I say to him, what is that creaking noise? We can't figure it out, it's louder when he pedals. We're almost home so we don't worry about it.

Today he gets his bike out to clean it for tomorrow's century (different one than mine). Here's what he texts me:

Thats a crack in the down tube of a bike made out of... What material would you guess? Yep, steel. This bike is a 14 year old Lemond, if that makes any difference. The crack was right near one of the bolts for the water bottle cages.

He just dropped the Sparrow back off, there was hope he could ride that, but it's too small.

Gotta ya hit the hay, big day tomorrow.

...thus one of the superior properties of steel as a frame material. No asplosion, plenty of warning. Bike says clearly, I am breaking dumbass, stop riding me.

What? I thought the advantage of steel bikes is that they never break?

Uh-oh. My Lemond just turned 14. Hope that doesn't happen to it this year. Mine only has a few hundred miles on it, so hopefully that helps. Wonder if I should go Camelbak 24/7, to avoid water bottle stress...

Check oil level, if low top off and try again
Unplug wire and test start if it does, try an engine oil flush and change.
Infrequent oil changes cause sludge to build on sensor, most generators recommend oil changes every 40 hours of operation. In that same 40 hours it is not unusual to consume 3 or 4 ounces of oil.
Good luck

I had a set of Nisi Countach wheels with Campy Record hubs in the 80s. All I rode were tubulars, mainly Clement cottons. I raced on Criterium Setas. Man, I miss that smooth ride.

Leaving Florida today and 8" is forecast for home starting tonight. We're stopping over in Nashville for a couple days so hopefully the roads will be cleared.

Oh that's more than 4X better than they predicted, which was 2F. You can probably leave a layer or two home now.

Ouch! A little duct tape and he'll be good to go.

Thanks. Just looking at the wind forecast and it is looking gnarly- lots of headwind climbing, in the afternoon the forecast is calling for 21 mph winds gusting to 35 mph. There will also be colder temps than originally forecast, mostly in the 40s and 50s, totally fine while climbing but we'll get cold when we stop. Its tricky eating/drinking in lots of wind, so that will be a factor too.

So this is exactly the ride Francis was trying to set up for us, its what we were all told to expect. That and: "Be safe, have fun, and look out for each other."
